Thaw of The Lich Lord - Thoughts on Playing the Lich Lord

So in our 3 player campaign we have reached the finale.  My son has agred to play as the Lich Lord.  I wondered what house rules people used when playign the lich Lord.  Things like;

Does he go in the creature phase, or roll initiative against the players as another spellcaster?
Can he control minions wthin 3" of him.
Can the Lich player control the wraith knights or should they roll for random movemnt as well?

How have other people played it?
