Figure scale compatibility - advice needed
« on: June 06, 2018, 06:53:59 PM »
I own many Space 1889 RAFM miniatures and plan, at last, to paint them. However I want to build other factions than english and martians. Do you know any colonial ranges compatible in size with RAFM ?
If none, in your opinion would it be better to buy humans from more recent figure ranges like Artizan or Perry ?
Thank you  :)

The old RAFM figures were a bit short by the standards of many of today's makers.  They were sculpted by Bob Murch, who today has his own line Pulp Figures; although set primarily in the 1920's - 30's of pulp fiction, some of the figures may be of use to you.  His Imperial German range has several packs of Seebattallion (think German Marines) in sun helmets, and colonial infantry in the slouch-hat with brim turned up on the right side.   Some of the Zeppelin troops may be useful too.  The British Empire section has British sailors with rifles armed with the SMLE.  The French Foreign legionaires are in uniforms too late for an 1889 campaign, being more in keeping with the late 20's to 1930's.

Thank you for the informations, Metternich.
Alas, from the samples I have, I think that Bob Murch has changed the size go his miniatures  ::)
Well, I think I have no choice but to keep only RAFM martians and use other makers for europeans…..

Good luck.  If you go that route, you might also want to check out some of the VSF figures other manufacturers now make that weren't available back when Space 1889 was launched. Just to scratch the surface:
Northstar has a "Death on the Red Planet" range that includes "Redcoats in Space."

Artizan has a fine line of VSF single figures:

Brigade has an interesting small VSF - Steampunk range, including British and German troops in "rebreathing apparatus," and Russian VSF characters:

And Copplestone Castings Darkest Africa range has wonderful Adventurers, German Seebattalion, and armed British sailors (which all mix quite well with the Wargames Foundry figures Africa range, which he also sculpted and which also contains many useful figures for adventuring on Mars).  Below are some samples

And this is where I shed a tear for the lovely Parroom Station figures, no longer available.

Older, smaller scale figs still show on eBay from time to time. I'm having trouble finding any 19th Century at the moment, but the only lines I can think of are Minifigs, Hinchliffe, and Heritage. Suggestions?

I bought a lot of the Rafm, especially when it looked as if they would be discontinued...

On the other side of the coin, as I've pointed out elsewhere (perhaps ad nauseam),  Bob Murch made his Martians after/while(?) doing D&D elves, and the influence shows. You might look at more 'modern' elf sculpts for possible 1889 proxies.

Back in the day I used Wargames Foundry colonial ranges and I thought they were completely compatible. The British lancers from the 1879 range made lovely gashant riders. https://www.wargamesfoundry.com/collections/zulu-war-1897/products/da164-british-lancers
I also used MG teams from the Sudan range, which matched very well, but alas these aren't currently listed on the Foundry site.

Bollix, you perhaps mean MG from the boer war range ? I have a few figurines and they are perfectly compatible with RAFM englishmen. Wargame Foundry colonials are an option but do you know if prussians from their FPW range would be compatible in size ?
By the way, Soldier's companion book showed pictures from Ral Partha and Falcon colonial ranges (which seemed OK concerning size). Do you know if the Falcon range is still in production ?

Tank you anyway for the informations you provided  ;)

EDIT: Found!

Admins allowing it, I'll list RAFM compatible figure ranges:
- Foundry Boer war
- Foundry North west frontier
- Foundry FPW
- Foundry Maximillian adventure (a little out of period, but some historical uniforms weirder than fantasy)
- Foundry Old west (civilians)
- Askari miniatures (colonial germans are OK….can't tell of other ranges)
- Parkfield miniatures 25mm ranges

I could not get that link to work, so not sure what you found. You may be right, the boer war mg team looks like what I have, been a long time since I bought them.

The Foundry FPW range also is the same scale. I had a number of their German Jaegers and they are the same size/style.

I had a couple of falcon guns/crews that matched up very well, but I think those figures have been unavailable for a long time now.

The Ral Partha figures were very slight compared with both RAFM and Foundry, I had them and used them in a pinch but was never very happy with any of them. I think they are nice figures if you were to use only them, but don't personally find that they match well with any other range I am aware of.

I second the Foundry Franco Prussian War figures as compatible with the old RAFM figures.  I also had some of the French sailors and Prussian Infantry, and they were compatible.
