Medieval Irish Flags
« on: June 11, 2018, 06:17:59 PM »
I'm just in the process of putting some flags and pennants on my medieval (14th century) Irish.

But it's caught me off guard.
Because I don't know what flags and emblems native Irish troops of the period used.

I would imagine those troops under English lords would use the appropriate heraldic flags.

But what about Irish troops fighting under Irish lords?

Worse comes to worse and I'll fall back on the default cetic knot imagery, but I wonder what actual flags and symbols were used by Irish troops. Again, not those under English lords, but those under Irish lords.

Does anyone know? Does anyone have any sources and imagery?

Well, I've just gone some way to answering my own question, which I'll post here in case it's of use to others...

http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/heraldry/heraldry.html

Seems by the time I am looking at there was an heraldic system in place very similar to British/continental heraldry.

I'll see if I can find some examples of the banners carried by individual captains within a clan...
