WSS units at 1:1 ratio
« on: June 15, 2018, 08:21:04 PM »
Here are some shots of something I have been working on, some WSS units at 1:1 ratio.

The units are a Dutch battalion, Vegelin's with red breeches (officers have red coats), of circa 600 men in 3 ranks. Plus two versions of a French battalion, the Normandie regiment (figures in blue are drummers). One is circa 600 men in 4 ranks and the other circa 450 men in 3 ranks.

I used 3d printed figures printed from Forward March Studio's files. The printing cost circa £3.50 - £4 for these figures (the ones used were part of a larger batch I had done. I cut them up and messed around with various bits to produce the units. The flags are taken from the excellent Hall booklets/CD's, resized, printed and glued on.

I am not sure what I will use them for gaming wise but it is good to see what a full unit might look like.

Great work. Love seeing the 1-1 units based. The bases look good - I am interested in how you did them.

Very nice. It is good to see units at their full size. Really shows how long and thin they were.

Thanks guys.

Goliad: The bases are 'plaster' to fill up the base - the kind of stuff you use to fill in holes in a wall. Then mostly just paint of various colours/dry brushing. The rest are various products designed for model railways. The 'trees' are sold as foliage to be put on larger model railway trees. Similarly the 'hedges' and other stuff is various model railway material 'reused' as something else. One advantage of this scale is the terrain can be simple to do.

These photos really show these figures at their best, and makes me ask how the heck they moved forward in a straight line and kept their formation let alone some of the fancy footwork I've seen my 28mm units do  lol

Not my thing, but it is very interesting to see how a battalion would look on the ground in it's proper formation; I see now why they were called "Line" infantry.
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

Agree (and yes, they look great in their simplicity). Rules wise you could use DBA-HX (a free fan-based add-on for DBA 3):

Do these miniatures now come only as files for printing ourselves?   They were available through Shapeways but I cannot see them there now.

Yes, the Shapeways store has been shut down. Compared to the former prices there I saved the $15 cost of the files within the first order I made through a local printer (via the 3dHubs service:    https://www.3dhubs.com  ) getting 40mm 3 rank infantry strips for 7c (5p) each.

I know nothing about 3dprinting and have no experience with the machinery or software but the 3dHubs website really makes it easy. Use the free sample file Forward March offer to play around with the service.
