Warriors of Valhalla (40K Imperial Guard)
« on: June 19, 2018, 02:10:16 AM »
Because two Brigade Detachments of Imperial Guard apparently wasn't quite enough, I've embarked on ANOTHER Imperial Guard force - this time Valhallans!

This is actually a squad I painted a few years ago (and may have even posted them here before)... but I thought I'd post it here to start things off. I'll post the others as they arrived and get painted.

I have enough GW Valhallans to fill out three HQ options (Commander Chenkov and two other officers), six Infantry squads, 3 command squads, and three heavy weapon squads.

I also have a few 1/48 scale WW2 KV-2 tanks that I thought I'd convert to use as Ragnnarock tanks (using the same stats as Leman Russ tanks) and three 1/48 scale BA-64 armoured cars that I though I'd use as 'sentinels' to fill out the fast attack roles (though I've been thinking of trying to find something like an OT-26 flame tank to use as a "hellhound").

A bunch more stuff arrived over the last week or so. Here is what I've got so far to work on...

What I'll have in the forces

Company Commander (HQ) and Command Squad with Vox-caster, Grenade Launcher, and Heavy bolter Team (Elite)

2x Platoon Commanders (Which will likely be fielded as Company Commanders, thus HQ) and 2x Command Squad each with Vox-caster, Melta gun, and two veteran troopers with lasguns (Elites)

6x Infantry Platoon (Sergeant with Chainsword and Bolt Pistol, 8 Troopers with Lasguns, 1 specialist trooper with Flamer)

3x Heavy Weapon Squads - one with Lascannons, two with Mortars (Heavy Support)

3x Ragnarok tanks - converted KV-2s, using Leman Russ stats (Heavy Support)

3x Light Scout Cars - converted BA-64s using Armoured Sentinel stats (Fast Attack)

(also considering some sort of flame tank - OT-26? - could be used as a Hellhound?)

Here's what I've got painted so far...

The entire (painted) force, so far...

Company Commander and his Command Squad

Reorganized First Squad (Infantry Squad)

Next up: two more mortar teams to finish the first Heavy Weapon Squad, then a couple more infantry squads... these may not be right away as I want to finish up my first Knight... and I still have Tallarn to work on...

Brilliant. Will be following this with interest. The Valhallans were my favourite of these old IG metals

Very cool..
You make me want valhallans :>
Pity they killed off old units but I am safer that way :P

I have Squad of Firstborn + command section in glorious bare metal waiting for better times, but I was meant to buy each old squad too for Inquisimunda purposes.. :(

Lets be honest here.. While Cadians are serviceable and can be cool after head swap.. they are no close to old metal cadians not to mention anything more interesting..

Valhallans, Tallarns, Steel legion, Pretorians..  Mordians, even metal Catachans have a strange charm :)
They are pure gold..

I hope the killing was in preparation for some new plastic guards but for now old metals beat anything..
(I hope for Death Korps my self but anything in coat would be good..)

The plastic guard and orks are aweful in my opinion ,I have the tallarn and voystroyans , I was hoping to get the valhallans and possibly the mordians but real life expenses got in the way .

I like my cadians that are heavily converted but simple head swap make them anew.
I cannot stand stock cadians.

Tim what are you planing to do to Kv2s ?

I am not fond of Leman Russ (silly unrealistic vehicle) and prefer the look of the Ragnarok but i feared that converted KV2s will be to WWII to my liking.

... and there was me thinking this was a Valhallan army building thread  ::) ;)

... The troop's camouflage scheme looks spot on and it gives them a 'real life' look to them as well. Nice work :) .

That's some nice painting thus far.  I like the idea of converting the KV-2s.

Sorry I took so long to get back to you about this - I've been on vacation...

Basically I have some spare battle cannon barrels and heavy bolters from Leman Russ tanks (I bought them as bits off eBay way before I started buying actual Leman Russ tanks...). The plan is to mount the battle cannon barrels on the mantlet and figure out some way to mount heavy boaters where the forward facing co-drivers MG would be... I know the "Epic scale" had two little stubber turrets over the tracks, but I might just not bother with those and say it's a simpler or earlier variant? I like to keep it simple. I'm not quite and Inso-level modeller/kit-basher.

If I can find enough 40K cupolas I might use those instead of the hatches provided.

I may also add some other kit/stowage on the back as I've done with the Tallarn Leman Russ tanks I've done already.

I saw these and thought I'd share (for mounting of Heavy Bolter and Battle cannon) :) :

This shows just the tip of a Heavy Bolter barrel on the mount (I'd probably do something similar but use a slightly longer piece of round sprue, drilled like a Heavy Bolter barrel near the tip):
