Simple Rowing Boat

As I am planning to make a couple of boats and ships of different sizes (if all goes well also including really big ships like a galleon) I thought I start with something small: a simple rowing boat  :D

Some years ago I made this version of a rowing boat but I didn't like the shape (too plump and short) and the texturing (too cartoony).


Starting with the geometry I stretched it into the desired shape.


Next I decoupled the sitting bars and made this part that one could easily put in position or take out as desired.


I like to hand texture-sketch a white prototype build, so I can imagine how it will look once the texturing is finished. I then placed this build with other sea-pirate-themed modules I have built ... and I like it so far  :)


Now it's time to start working on the texturing!

For the texturing I went for a simple wood version. A small boat like this did not have a fancy paint job.

I made some tabs for the inlay part so it could be positioned better if you want to make it removable.


The underside of the tabs was textured so there would be no white leaking and breaking the illusion.


Here I have tried out some of the paper minis I have.


As a final detail I have added optional oars and oar holders. What is a rowing boat without oars!


So this concludes my first foray into the naval vessels of the pirate age.


Next I want to do a longer version of a rowing boat, like the big ships had to transport a group of British soldiers or a bunch of pirates!
