Need to know making plastic filler from old sprues?
« on: June 20, 2018, 03:11:20 PM »
Last century I seem to remember a recipe for making a filler or gloop from old plastic sprues and I believe it was turpentine?  Anyone seem to remember this? or was it white spirit?

Liquid poly cement, the thin clear stuff in bottles. Syringe about half the bottle into a small sealable jar and add in small cuttings of sprue. Leave and stir every few days and keep adding sprue until you get the consistency you want.

acetone might be a bit cheaper. Or even acetone based nail polish remover. The one that does dissolve the plastic nails.

Interesting concept; I can see many uses for this, that I previously used Green Stuff or ProCreate for; gap/seam/hole sealing when assembling plastic miniatures for instance. Or the same when building with plasticard.

I think I'm going to give it a try... :)
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

But do crack a window, that sounds very toxic.

Oh; I can handle it; I've been on a continuous polystyrene-cement high since I was about eleven and started building model planes.

Or was I ten? Or nine? ::)

Doesn't really matter, but I do like the way it tastes like yellow...  ;D

If doing/filling large areas beware of shrinkage if your mix is more liquid than solid, the solvent will evaporate.
cheers

You want Methyl-Ethyl-Ketone (M.E.K. ) sold in gallons dirt cheap in the paint supply of most big-box home improvement centers and better hardware stores. It also works great as a glue.

Insanely volatile so decant it into lots of smaller bottles and seal well. Do all your pouring and mixing outdoors this stuff will melt your brain and blow up if given a chance. That said, it is exactly what you are looking for, just handle carefully.

I used to grind up old sprue with an old-fashioned pencil sharpener, the hard styrene stuff (Hasegawa, Tamiya, Monogram) works best, I'm not sure about the waxy stuff Renedra and GW uses

A word of caution. Sprue mixed with glue, can have the same results with too much glue on a styrene surface. It can make the area around it soft and even deform it. IMO this mix doesnt worth the time and effort. It used to be a remedy of old times when fillers and modelling putties were not readily available. Like the recipe with talk powder and enamel paint. Get yourself a tamiya putty and the acrylic putty of Deluxe. Its all you need.
