28mm Flora and Fauna for the Amazon ?
« on: June 24, 2018, 12:44:40 PM »
This months Wargames Illustrated magazine article regarding the use of the Congo rules to game a search for El Dorado along the Amazon using 16th c Conquisadores has inspired me to begin collecting figures for a period that I have long had an interest in.
With orders put in to Wargames Foundry and TAG for the Conquisadores, Outpost Wargame Services for Native Porters and Old Glory for the Natives (Cannibals and Canoe from their Pirate range) I now need to populate the playing area with suitable Flora and Fauna.
So far I have managed to find a Giant Anteater from Ebay, a couple of Jaguars from Arcane Scenery and a Sloth from Reaper Miniatures and as for Flora, I already have plenty of aquarium plastic plants and some Pegasus Palm Trees.
Can anyone suggest any manufacturers of monkeys, parrots/birds and anything else including different foliage that might be encountered in a jungle environment please ?
This is a project I've often thought of doing but never got around to but am now determined to get done !

Thanks in advance

Regards

Reaper mini has animals including birds (perhaps not tropical birds, but they could be painted tropical colors)

For snakes, try a bag of toy plastic party favors.  Some of them are a few inches long and pre painted--nice anacondas.

The Amazon basin does have native palm trees, likely to be mixed with other leafy tropical hardwood trees.   The usual aquarium and dollar store stuff.

You should check out Hammer's Chicken race on the Arumbaya an Amazonian project in the pulp era
plenty of ideas that could be used for an earlier period

Thanks for the quick replies.
Couldn't find Monkeys on the Brigade Games site other than Baboons and shipping from the States (I'm in the UK) for a bag or two of the Parrots, Toucans and Idols works out to be about £10 so I might have to give them a miss unfortunately - which is a shame because they're lovely looking figures.
I forgot to mention that I have tons on snakes so no need for more. Banana Trees looks promising, thanks, I'll order up some of those and thanks for the link old duck, I'll give that a look at some time today.
If anyone else has any thoughts, please keep them coming.

Bad Squiddo has an iguana and capybara - the latter very much an amazon specialist!  http://badsquiddogames.com/shop#!/Animals/c/21735086/offset=0&sort=addedTimeDesc

Note, the banana "trees" are small; 1.5" to 2.5" as it says on the box . They aren't very tall plants in reality but to my eye they still look a bit short.

Also be warned that the banana plants are quite fragile. The leaf stems are very thin and the attachment to the main stem is delicate. Several of mine have leaves on the base because they broke off. I really like them but they are not designed for ham fisted players.

Could you reinforce the banana leaf stems with a dab of 5 minute epoxy?
You'll shoot your eye out, kid!

Thanks for the heads up about the fragile Banana Trees - I went for Arcane Scenery's own brand of Tropical Trees in the end, hopefully they'll be OK. I love the Capybara but a shame that it's so big but I'll be ordering the Iguana. Picked up some Reaper Vultures which I'll have lurking in the trees waiting for a carcass or two  :)
I thought I'd have some ancient ruins dotted about as well so I've got Scotia Grendel's Olmec Ruins and Aztec Entrance and picked up a nice ruined Maya aquarium statue from Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wave-A8011730-Maya-Statue/dp/B01AXPTH8C
Any other ideas for ruins, flora and fauna are welcomed thanks.

Hi !

I don't know in wich country you live but as an advice i could tell you to take a look at :

http://www.decorsminiatures.fr/

There is a large and often inexpensive choice for flora , and even fauna !

For the Meso-american architecture , you could see the aquarium decoration on Amazon ! (Edit : ooops ! you already look at these  :D)
