SMK (15mm 3d print)
« on: June 26, 2018, 11:29:27 PM »

This is my 3d-printed 1:100 scale model of the SMK, a Soviet prototype heavy tank, produced as a proposed replacement for the T-35.

One SMK was tested in action during the Winter War with the Finns; it was disabled by a mine. The SMK was passed over in favour of the KV-1.

The model was printed on my Ender-3 at 0.08mm layer height in PLA. Overall I'm reasonably happy with it, but the guns are a bit out of scale for ease of printability, and it could have done with a bit more sanding on the turrets. The .STL file came from TigerAce1945 on Thingiverse.

Stonking!

Needs 2x T-100s, 2x KV-1 and 1x KV-2 for the Winter War experimental heavy tank platoon ;)

Nice.

I see what you mean about the turret, though I expect it is not so noticeable im real life.

I won't start about the serrations (pet peeve of mine and boring everyone to death by now), but that running gear honestly doesn't look good at all.

Is the hull and running gear a single piece? I wonder if it could be improved by separating the tracks and wheels and printing them lying flat. Or was the design made for a larger scale and the strength of the wheel rims got reduced too much for 1/100? A bit of a missed opportunity.

That said, good proportions and a huge beast.

Is that at a scale of  300mm to the foot?

Messing around to see if 1/300 would work.  It almost does. With more finishing work it could be acceptable

It's layers of 1mm MDF and it's the joins that need attention.  With the new laser tube it would probably be sharper.  The barrels are a bit big and you can see the turret has split.
