(AP 2019) Tunisia in ‘42
« on: June 29, 2018, 06:12:05 PM »
I haven’t had much luck with these APs so far, but this go around will be different. I mean it this time.  :)

My plan for Bayou Wars 2019 is to run a (fictional) scenario between the US and the DAK in Tunisia, using the Five Men in Kursk rules.  To handle 8 players I’ll need to paint up a platoon for each side plus some support elements.  I’ll also need to make appropriate buildings and other terrain suitable for the area.  Figures are Old Glory (Command Decision) and Peter Pig.

My goal is to finish one squad a month, with the terrain work mixed in.  The first step is to get a squad for each side painted up so I can play some small games right away.

IT sounds like you are going about it the right way. A small bit at a time until you are at the right spot.

I’ve finished the first German squad.

I’m not entirely happy with them; I think I need larger contrasts between the base and highlights.  I’ll try that on the US squad I’m painting next.

The first US squad is complete.

I added some black lining to these and to the Germans, it really brings out the detail a lot more.

I haven’t given up on this.  I just haven’t kept up with my schedule, and my light box has been full of random junk I never got around to putting away.  Now it’s clear, and I’ve gotten some photos of the second US and German squads.

US second squad:

US first and second squads together:

German second squad:

German first and second squads together:

On the second squads, I went with just a base color and highlight rather than base/mid/highlight.  On comparing them to the first squads, I think it doesn’t work on the uniforms, but I can get away with it on everything else.

In addition to the photo above, I have anothe half squad of Germans almost finished, and I’m making progress on the terrain part of the project as well. No new photos yet, but I should have some soon.

Slowly. I was distracted for a bit by Bag the Hun, but the planes are done now and I’m back to working on this.

Here’s one of the finished buildings, and half the next German squad.

The buildings are matte board covered in acrylic paste. They are then washed with very thin raw umber ink, then heavily dry brushed with white.

Nice work. You can't tell the building is matte board. It could be resin or mdf. Well done!
