Recommendations for a cheap box for storing paints
« on: July 26, 2018, 02:25:49 PM »
Hi guys,

I've recently had to move out of my man-cave as we are expecting our first child in September and that will be his nursery. As a result I need to move all of my hobby stuff out. This hasn't been much of an issue with most things but I need something to put all of my paints etc. in which will be easy to move and access when I need it. Has anyone got any recommendations for a decent cheap paintbox that they use? I'm potentially looking for something like a toolbox which will fit paints of various sizes in and mean I can get to them relatively easily. If anyone has used something similar and can recommend it I'd be really grateful!

Thanks for your help  :D

They called shoe boxes, man.  They come free with your shoes!   lol

I'm still using several wooden wine(? They could have held other bottles too; they're a bit small for full scale wine bottles...) boxes I got as gifts many, many years ago. They're square(ish) and hold about 64 vallejo type bottles each, comfortably.

They were free, they're sturdy, and hold enough bottles for my needs. Disadvantages are that they are basically open squares, with no grid or frame to hold bottles in place, so jostling a box when it's not completely full will result in bottles toppling and getting out of place (red bottles inbetween green ones, ugh), and they have no carrying handle to tote them around. So when painting away from my desk, I have to stack them and carry them like that.

But considering they were free, and 99.9% of the time sit in a drawer beneath my desk, I can live with it. Eventually though, I'm hoping to replace them with some sort of purposebuilt paint storage rack of sorts...
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

I used seedling trays - borrowed the idea from Chris Steadman  ;)

Sorry I haven't got a pic (at work right now) but my latest solution to ready paint storage is a cheap wood/veneer CD tower from a charity shop. One of those with the pegs so you can alter the spacings of the shelves.  It is about 8 or 9 inches wide. I bought some sets of open top plastic baskets from Poundland which fit perfectly in the spaces. Each basket holds about 20 paint pots, with each basket labelled; blues in one, greens in another, browns....and so on. It takes up very little floor space and is the best solution I have found so far and I can locate colours very quickly.
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

figures bought: 500+
figures painted: 57
9 vehicles painted
4 terrain pieces scratchbuilt

I use RUB for my Foundry/Coat d'Arms/ancient Citadel paints, and a wooden winebox for Vallejo and double-stacked Citadel colours.

I use a beer tray (the metal round one they use in pubs to carry the drinks around) not the most useful storage box but easy to carry around and throw everything in!
