The Lord of the Rings - Painting and Listening!
« on: July 08, 2018, 04:08:48 PM »
I recently acquired a copy of the 1981 BBC Radio Adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, which I'm using as an excuse to paint some LOTR minis.

You can read my full thoughts on episode 1 here. https://therenaissancetroll.blogspot.com/2018/07/the-shadows-of-past-episode-1.html

Here's a shot of the Radagast I painted while listening to the episode (in which he unexpectedly appears!)

Nice work - both on the figures and on getting an audio tape to work!!

We tried some a good number of years ago and they really where poor sound wise they had degraded while sitting around for 20+ years - and this is even by the standards of cassette tapes!

Are these available anywhere now?

Nice work on the wizard - and yes, very good to see a proper Ragadast rather than a comic turn with rabbits...

I have very fond memories of the 1981 radio version, which I listened to as a schoolboy when it was first broadcast. Haven't revisited it since, but I suspect it might be something for long car journeys when the children are a little older (I reckon they should read the book first, though).

Are these available anywhere now?

CD version readily available, £80 RRP or £50 on Amazon...

They are also available on audible. The BBC repackaged them into 3 ‘books’, Fellowship of the Rings, Two Towers and Return of the King each with an introduction and postscript by Ian Holm as Frodo, reminiscing about his adventures as he writes them.

As for Saruman, we get to see the full power of his voice when the victors of Helms Deep confront him at Isengard. One of my favourite moments in the whole series! Fantastic stuff.

If that's the production I'm thinking it is, with Ian Holm, John Hurt, Michael Hordern etc, my brother and I painstakingly recorded every episode on cassette (remember those?*) as they were broadcast, including one in a bed and breakfast in Mallaig, Scotland which had a guest's loo with the loudest high-mounted cistern you've ever heard, and somehow at the beginning of our recording that was captured through the adjoining wall ...  :D

the guy who did Gollum (peter ...) was definitive (I thought at the time).

tapes long since junked, sorry to say.

(* - oops - I think the OP remembers cassettes, rather obviously!  ::) )

There was a terrific Radio Times cover for the launch of the series:

That's a lovely, very "Tolkienesque" painting!

BTW, your painted Radagast looks good. Very similar to how I painted this model.

Continuing to listen to the BBC Radio Adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. Episode 2 contains a scene written by J.R.R. Tolkien that does not appear in The Lord of the Rings! And painted a high-elf to boot.  Full story:
