Primer Color (Version XXX?)
« on: July 12, 2018, 03:02:36 AM »
Likely done to death but I've been wondering...

White for brighter color, but damnably unforgiving.

Black is most forgiving, but most dulling.

Gray, just a half step either way.

So, what about "Red" primer, meaning the red brown (very much more brown than red)?

Mainly I'm asking because I'm getting ready to work on some of my AWI infantry - goal is not contest quality but high rate of production for a good 'gaming' standard.  I'm figuring the red brown will be much more forgiving than gray or white without the dulling absorption of black.

How say you lot (other than it's been discussed before - unless you kindly provide a useful link)?

Thank you kindly.

I use a mid brown (Liquitex Bronze Yellow).
A good base for other colours, and missed bit look like leather or wood.

Right now Iím priming with white, then brushing on brown (burnt umber) ink. The ink settles in the recesses like a very dark wash, making it easy to see the details and helping to hide any spots I miss.

I prime with my airbrush, so usually Im going for best of two worlds. Zenithal highlight of white over black.

I prefer grey. For my next project I will be priming a neutral grey followed by a dark wash as Billchuck does. For models that will be primarily red or brown I prime brown.

A friend used a red brown when painting his SYW/AWI British as it was a basecoat for the red jackets and flesh.
Wargamers do it on a table.

I go for black, then drybrush the lot with white leaving gaps in black, applied with the right degree of drybrush cover over the black it produces nice shadows in recessed or hidden areas, and a comic-book illustration effect (sort of).

For ACW figures I usually go with grey. It is a good base for greys & blues. Although I do use red/brown. If it shows through a little it give the figures a little battle worn look. Red/brown primer for horses. White primer if you want you figures to look parade ground fresh.

I make things unnecessarily complicated by priming in black and then doing a thin basecoat in whichever colour will dominate the figure using Vallejo's pigment-heavy basecoat line.

Although I prime grey I really like that  colour line.
