Help with a Devil's tail
« on: July 15, 2018, 09:21:09 AM »
Howdy, folks! Inspired by Dracula's America, I began to sculpt some monsters I miss from the bestiary, searching on North America folklore and legends and choosing my favorites.

Here is the Jersey Devil (40mm to the ears, its little bat wings are scuplted apart) He is still a WIP, and need work on his legs and tiny claws.

I haven't got casting intentions, but who knows...What I know right now is that I need some advice from the wise sculptors of the forum, please. In case of an hypothetical casting: what is the best position for the Jersey devil tail? Straight or screwed, touching the base? These are my first sculpts at this size and I have no idea.

Criticism are more than welcomed.
Thanks in advance!

I'd think touching the base; stronger, and easier to cast as the metal will flow through.

Thanks, sir! I'm on it. Will add more pictures when the beast is finished.

Looks promising and I would second having the tail attached to the base.
cheers

Most importantly you need to think of the mold line. The mold is (broadly) two flat chunks of rubber heated and pressed around your model. So you can't have any features that 'loop' away from the plane where the two mold halves meet. This is why every old school single piece casting is broadly 2 dimensional - most notable on creatures with long tails where the tail sticks straight out.
