Go to an art shop and buy a tube of Artists Acrylic Gesso (this is actually pronounced Jesso).

Im using gesso for painting, but not for miniatures. Mainly because it doesnt have any kind of self leveling properties. It has the consistency of very thick wall paint. And what is readily available as acrylic gesso (the traditional gesso is something quite different) is kinda rubbery when dry.

That’s why I thin it.

By thinning it, you just make it very similar, if not the same to normal acrylic paint. It still can cover up detail though.

Thanks for all the advice  :)

A friend has a bottle of the Badger primer in grey, so I borrowed that and brushed it onto a test piece. Lots of bubbles gathered in the detail of the model which I was less than pleased about, but then they all quickly disappeared as the primer was drying, left me with a good hard finish!

I use Vallejo primers. They are designed for the airbrush but they brush on just fine.

Edit: as your profile says you are in Wales here is a link to the Firestorm Games Vallejo primers section.

dont be afraid if there is toomuch in one place, it will self level once dry, just give it some time. The good thing about it is that you can sandpaper it like the solvent primers. Thats why i use it on vehicles and hard edges

Badger's Stynylrez is perfect and doesn't have the horrible smell the Vallejo ones have when still wet. As the most famous space pirate in whole galaxy noted above, you may be able to get the exact same product but a bit cheaper under the Ultimate Primer brand.

+1. I use Liquitex, it works like a charm.
