So after a couple of months painting Indian Mutiny stuff it's back to the Peninsula (Hurrah).
As these forces have grown I've used different sets of rules to play games with them, Fistful of Lead and Rebels and Patriots to name a few.
My first love as far as large skirmish games are concerned however has been Sharpe Practice from Too Fat Lardies. I know these rules like every other set I've played has its supporters and critics but it's fair to say I think they are great.
With that in mind I wanted to play a small game to convince my regular gaming buddy Romark that Sharpe Practice was worth another go. We tried them in the past with mixed results and I think Romark probably prefers R&P.
However undaunted I dragged him kicking and screaming to my man cave and plied him with copious amounts of alcohol (ok black coffee but you get my drift) which coaxed him to stay and give them another go.

I kept the game small and used a scenario from the rule book which involved a small raid by an elite force of British Lights to rescue a local damsel who was being held against her will by a dastardly French Force which almost twice the size in models was actually the same strength in points.

The forces were:
Lt. Sharpe lvl 3 big man
Sgt Harper lvl 1 big man
Sgt Hakeswill lvl 1 big man
6 Riflemen and 12 Light Infantry skirmishers

The French forces consisted of :
Pierre Ducos lvl 2 big man
Lt Pepe le Pugh lvl 2 big man
Sgt Cul Enorme lvl 1 big man
4 units of 6 Voltigeur skirmishers
2 units of 8 Line Fusiliers

Both forces come to a total of 43 points.

However guarding the prisoner was Sgt Vieux Grincheux with another 8 Line Fusiliers. Grincheux is a lvl 0 leader and treated as a minor character in the game, this means he basically rolls on a couple of charts in order to find out what his reaction is to be when confronted by the enemy. In this case he was having none of it and put up a very good fight, but more of that later.

These photos show the table layout the red dots are the British deployment points and the blue dot is the French deployment point.
The prisoner is held in the building with the large balcony and the British must get her from there to their deployment point at the top of the table.

The British plan was straight forward, Sharpe and Hakeswill with the light bobs would hold the primary deployment point (marked by a wagon) while Sgt Harper and the chosen men would release the prisoner and make their way back to the deployment point guarded by Sharpe.
The French could win two ways, they could recapture the prisoner as she was escorted to the British lines or capture the British primary deployment point thus taking away the only route of escape for the rescuers.
Here's what happened .......

First unit on to the table was two units of Voltigeurs led by Enorme, they quickly moved towards the Chateu holding the prisoner to try and help Grincheux and his guards.
Harper appeared in the gateway leading to the courtyard and was immediatley attacked by Grincheux.
Two rounds of fisticuffs later and all the Rifles were dead and Harper wounded limped back out through the gate to hide near a nearby shed.
Crikey this game was looking like it was going to be over very quickly, I had to roll a couple of times on the force morale chart which took a large chunk of points of my British stiff upper lip.

Quick change of the British plan, shouting BASTARDS!!!  Sharpe and six light bobs had to take over from Harper leaving Hakeswill with the remaining light bobs to hold the deployment point. The French Line arrived under Ducos and immediatley began to pour fire on Hakeswill's men.
Sharpe entered the courtyard and dispatched what was left of  Grincheuxs men with a volley entered the building and returned with the prisoner.
Hey op! yelled Sharpe that's not the young beauty I was told to rescue, is it her mother? Sorry sir but she's the only person left in the house, said one of his men. BASTARDS !! Yelled Sharpe, they've tucked me up like a kipper. Climb up behind me then Grandma, any port in a storm hey.
Not wasting any time, Sharpe and his crew were off, the photo below shows the route they would take to get back to safety.
Harper running from the shed to try and join Sharpe was hit by a musket ball knocking him unconscious just short of the gateway where he lay for the rest of the game.

Another unit of French Voltigeurs arrive and immediatley move to attack Hakeswill and his men who were desperately trying to hold the wagon deployment point.
Sharpe took every opportunity to move with three dice of movement across the table, hoping beyond hope that the Bastard Hakeswill could hold on.

Charge yelled the Voltigeurs, Hold the line yelled Hakeswill, Bastards yelled Sharpe as he galloped off the table to safety while Light Bobs died around him. A very close British win HURRAH!!!

Great game and as close as it gets, really enjoyed it and most importantly Romark said he'd like to play again (mission accomplished) probably have to go and rescue Harper now :)

I've played them quite a few times now Nick, at various Lardy days around the country. I really like them, they are very much narrative driven and most definitely not a competition set. Have a look at the videos on you tube, they give a good feel for the rules 👍
