Biggles Takes An Early Bath
« on: February 26, 2007, 10:15:33 PM »
As promised, the full battle report of this weekend's shenanigans. As the man said "The ever-popular war game with songs, battles, and a few jokes."

http://misterplynkes.blogspot.com/

Try as I might to keep the verbosity to a minimum, it does go on some. So for those who can't be bothered with all that reading, here are some teaser pics to give something of a flavour of the thing:

Here we see Matrose Grimm, selling his life dearly, with love of his Kaiser in his heart, and a song on his lips. I hope nobody minds the inclusion of forum members as characters, it is something of a fledgling tradition with Pete and Myself. It started out as a kind duel or wager between us, as we tried to kill each other by little lead proxy. I thought it might be fun to include some of the Lead Adventurer's now and again, and something about this chap's intense, bearded countenance put me in mind of "our" Grimm.

I do please beg the pardon of the German members of our esteemed forum, for my hideous schoolboy mangling of their fascinating language.

Some points on my misdeeds regarding the German tongue:

1) I am aware of the fact that "Oberammergau," rather than being a German curse-word, is in fact a small town in Bavaria. It's just that I have always felt that it should be a swearword. It just sounds like something you would say when you stub your toe. I love the whole idea of meaningless random words being used as expletives. It is not unusual to hear Sickly and Plynkes accusing one another of being Tuning-forks, breast implants or radiators when they quarrel.

Just think of Oberammergau as a kind of German Haddockism.

2) The nominative, dative and other mysterious cases, and the various adjectival endings associated with them are a mystery to me, and it hurts my head thinking about them. They hurt it in school, and they still hurt it. Anglo-Saxons were not designed to learn other languages, in fact I'm sure that the main driving force behind the British Empire was a desire to make all foreigners speak English.

So I beseech your forgiveness if I ballsed them up entirely.

3) Not knowing the German word for "Upper-class twit" I made one up as near as I could manage. Sorry about that.

Finally, I was just trying to have some fun, so don't be too annoyed with me if I have broken your language beyond repair. It wasn't deliberate, honest.

Yours,
Dyl

What "Grimm" is singing is from a verse of "Die Wacht am Rhein" which I'm given to understand was a patriotic song popular from at least the time of the Franco-Prussian War, through the Great War, right up to the end of World War Two (though I am almost certain that I have got the words all wrong).

Here's a snippet:

And fear not, I am certain that Witchheimer will slip his leash, give his Belgian captors the slip, swim the lake and eventually rejoin General von Hanneken and his Schutztruppen!

Another splendid report, from graphics and onomotopeia to accompanying text! I think what I like best about your reports are the bits of detail in them--Matrose Grimm singing "Wacht am Rhein", for example, or the swimming Biggles. And I do like immortalizing other known gamers in the games, and you could do worse than to pick this mob for your Germans.

It is very much like being there and playing the game. Actually, it is worse, because it makes me yearn to play said game without having played it.

Yes, Grimm must return, even though he died. Don't know quite how we'll manage that. Maybe he has many brothers, all in the Navy.

Perhaps we won't even bother to explain it, he'll simply keep coming back, like Kenny in "South Park."

I think he should be promoted, too. He's been a lowly Matrose for long enough.

Zoogla doesn't sound much like a German sailor name to me. Maybe an Askari NCO, a Masai Laibon or an Ngoni Witch-Doctor? There will be some naughty Yemeni tribesmen in a future game. Perhaps he will be one of those.

Oops, almost forgot. Here's the medal for your lead proxy, Grimm.

He certainly earned it.

I love your battle report!  Really funny stuff!

Grimm isn't dead!  Of course not!  As the boat sank, he drifted unconscious to the shore, where he was rescued by an Ngoni witchdoctor named Zoogla!

No - not Zoogla but Zoogalala!
