New Project: GNW: The Swedish phase has started
« on: July 26, 2018, 04:00:33 PM »
Just managed to finish these. They are 15mm and from Legio Heroica.
I painted them as Arkangelogorodsky Regiment. My source for the uniform was the splendid: The Russian army in the Great Northern War 1700-21 by Boris Megorsky from Helion & Company.

I've still got  lots of regiments to paint, but the first unit of a new project is always important to me.

Very nice  :)

Can I ask why the bases are so tall? Is it just for the name scroll on the back?
cheers

Thanks.

The 5mm thick bases have been a thing of mine for a quite long time.  They are really easy to move and pick up. Also they rank up easily. I like my units more as boardgame pieces.
This is the first unit that has the name of the unit written in the base. As it shows, I still have to practice the freehand painting and writing.

 Fantastic painting well done.

Can't get my head around the basing though.

I saw somebody do something similar with some Warhammer Fantasy move trays. They used 3/4 inch thick wooden material (about 15mm; something locally available and inexpensive) for their trays/stands. At first, I wondered, “Why?”  But, once I saw it in action opposing another Army it made sense. You could instantly see at a glance which Army was which.

The project finally got some more steam.
After a little thought, I decided to split the regiment to two battalions. So here is the second battallion of Archangelogorotsky regiment and the two battalions from Smolensky regiment.

And a group picture

I'm planning to paint eight more battalions before switching to cavalry and artillery, followed by the Swedes.
So there is still more to come. Hopefully much sooner than these.

Your basing works and does give a quality board game look.

Lovely work! Really crisp painting, the units certainly "pop", I like the basing it works well for me and I can see why you go with it. :)

I think the pics, although impressive, they don't do justice to the excellent paintjob you achieved! Congrats!
You could possibly could make some more close-ups so that we can admire your work!

yes, this.

I think with 15mm this is pretty much an ideal look - certainly for this era anyway.
lovely painting too I should add.

More progress.

Today I finished the Preobrazhensky Guards regiment with three battalions.
There is only five infantry battalions to go and then I'm painting the dragoons and artillery.

Thanks for all the compliments for the previous posts.
