Thanks roger.

I couldn't agree more about WYSIWYG getting in the way of good sociable play. But at the same time my own inner roleplayer wants heavily armed dwarfs crunching about in chain mail hauberks ROUND shields and axes.  :-)

I too use magnets for bases... in this instance small magnets glue to the underside of bases and figures transported in a biscuit tin.

I am imagining the magnets will come in equally useful for figures climbing walls. Now all I need is steel terrain!

The warband and spells look fine. If you're looking to make it more competitive I'd consider taking leap over imp from summoner, as it's easily the most broken spell in the game. Crossbows are a bit of a risk/reward type of unit compared to archers. They'll be shooting a lot less, but can be pretty devastating if you roll high.

Very nice warband (I'd go with the rightmost imp by the way).
Looking forward to seeing them painted up.

To be honest , you'll probably end up with a different warband than what you started with after a few games.
My advice would be to get one of the warband sets, original , barbarians or even the oathmark dwarves. for less than £20 you'll have 20 figs to mess around with.
play a few games, do your warband upgrades when money allows and Then get your figs to match the upgraded warband.
People start with thieves and thugs, they get upgraded pretty swiftly. Then the archers and crossbowmen get upgraded to ranges and marksmen, men at arms to knights/templars , you get the idea.
You might end up with more or less ranged attackers depending on the table setup.
Its a constantly changing game and with the money you make you can change along with it.
Just dont fall into the trap of sticking with your original warband coz thats the figs you have, your opponents may not ;)
Either way have fun, the rules lawyers have been duck taped to the skip with no desire to release them any time soon.
I've thought of playing a game with a cow (counts as a warhound) just coz I can ...lol

Thanks for the advice Roger - I'm pretty committed to the HF dwarfs though and I do like a spot of roleplaying in with my wargames.

I have 50 HF dwarfs, every model plus 3 packs of the spear and normanesque multipacks and a dozencrossbowmen.  So over time my plan was as I upgrade the warband i assemble modify and paint an extra soldier and then I can keep recycling.

The only issue with this is that all the figures have chain armour, so I am picking the ones with tabards and quilted armour over the chain to be the lower armoured types as the armour is less visible. I was hoping to paint today but haven't been able to. WIP pictures tomorrow i hope.

Urgh!

A bit more progress

I always feel quite good about what I've painted until I see the blown up pictures!

I think the flash is washing these about a bit too, but I cannot blame the flash for the fact i splodge paint everywhere! So these are now closer to real size on my monitor!

Thank you!

Nothing better to hear than a "crikey!" or a Nice with multiple "i"s

Added a few markers for magic items to help me keep track rather than using pen and paper... more on this later.

Thanks - printed on to blank playing cards

The images will makes sure i remember which figure is representing which soldier type ...

My plan is to have them laid out on a holder backed with steel sheet and then use the markers above (that have magnets in them) to mark magic items, special effects etc, I'm planning on using D6 to show the stats that change like Health. Just turn the dice over to change the spots when injured or healed.

For me making things is half the fun, and i dislike all the paper and pencils and 'stuff' that can clutter a table...
