I cut off most of the plinth, then using my dremel, with a sanding drum, I work down the remaining plinth until I have close to a flat foot. Then I finish it off with a jewelers file across both feet at once.
If I do it right the figure can stand on his own two feet.
Then I drill a hole up one leg and glue in a piece of aluminum wire.
The wire gets jabbed into a cork for painting. When painting is done, a hole is drilled in the base, the wire is glued in the hole, and both feet are glued to the base.
I used to use paper clip, up both legs, but when it comes time to base the figure, they need to go through a little posing. The leg is softer than the paper clip and bends first, but the aluminum wire is softer than the leg. Having the wire up both legs was problematic when it came to drilling the base and posing the figure, one leg gives me more flexibility.

I came here planning to recommend some bases which should work well with the techniques described here, but now all I can think about is those robots / tin men in the post above. Who makes them?

Oh, the bases: I've been using these recently, though for figures without integral bases (the dimples and corresponding indentations on the bottom simplify drilling).

Thank you. I've never come across them, though it's not one of my core interests, at least until Galactic Heroes come out. I see they produce rules themselves. Have you used them?

I haven’t used the rules yet.
I’ve only just started in the hobby, and my interests are not WarHammer, so if I want to play anything, I need to build two armies.
