2nd Afghan War Help needed.
« on: August 05, 2018, 01:54:45 PM »
Hello all

New to this topic so some help is needed.
I´m planing a small project for me and my brother and on buying some 2nd Afghan war miniatures both british and afghans so i was thinking on the Perry miniatures.
Does the british equipment for the Sudan is the same as to the 2nd Afghan war?
Appart from the Perrys, what manufacturers can i mix with wish are compatible in scale ?

Thanks in advance
Kind regards

Rui

For the Afghan tribesmen, I have quite happily included Castaway Arts, Old Glory, Perry and Artizan, even in the same units.  For teh British and for the Afghan regulars, I will use all of the above but will keep them in separate units.  Foundry also excellent, but overpriced compared to the others, so I don't have any in my collection.

Some crossover with Sudan is possible.  For the Perry figures, look at SB21, SB22, SB 23 which feature the covered helmet and puttees.  The Perry Plastic box (VLW1, British in Afghanistan) is of course perfect for Afghanistan!  https://www.perry-miniatures.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_62&products_id=3454

Hi rumacara,

Will listed just about every company for Afghan/NWF Tribesmen and their British and Indian opponents, and I thank him for also mentioning my blog!  Though he's right about Wargames Foundry being arguably over-priced compared to the competition, I still love their North-West Frontier range, which was sculpted by the Perry brothers back in the Nineties.

For Second Afghan War British you can also potentially use certain figures from the Empress Zulu War range -- Army Gatling guns, 17th Lancers serving as 9th Lancers, various command figures -- though at this point there is little need to press-gang figures from other campaigns into service, since the Perrys and/or Artizan Designs have most of the troop types covered.  Still, both have yet to release Gurkhas, which as far as I know must be sourced from the old Foundry range, or Pontoonier Miniatures, who have Gurkhas in their Third Burma War range.

In my humble opinion the Second Afghan War is a great choice for a new "small" project -- in addition to a decent selection of major battles, the campaign includes tons of interesting smaller actions and skirmishes, involving a wide variety of troop types in a wide variety of scenarios set in mountains, desert, vilages, and walled cities.  I wish you the best of luck with it, and when and if you do move forward, please post about it here!

Studio Miniatures makes great looking Afghans for the First Afghan War that of course also can be used in the Second ;-)).
And no Colonial Wargamer should be without Major-General Tremorden Rederring's Colonial Wargame pages ! A rather old but still priceless site, findable through a Wayback Machine copy (mentioned here): https://plus.google.com/+GarethSkarka/posts/B2tqEpvjy93 , while the page itself is found here:

Gentlemen, i thank you for your help on manufacturers, tips on blogs and info. :)

After a quick search i probably end up buying from Artizan and Perrys.
For what i have in mind they have enough choice for my project.
On a future i may mix other companies but i will enter slowly on this project without spending much money. :)

Mad Guru, indeed your blog has lots of info and your collections are something. ;)
Thank you Will. ;)

Leunstoelgeneraal i will certainly investigate your links with time and attention. ;)

Tiger Miniatures also have Second and Third Afghan War figures, including Afghan Regulars.

My Gurkhas are from Castaway Arts, so there is a third option for you! https://secure.iig.com.au/castawayarts/index.php?cmd=store

Plus, there is a single Gurkha (Billy Fish) in the Artizan Range along with a couple of chaps considering becoming kings:  https://www.artizandesigns.com/prod.php?prod=2031

On the Perry Mins FB page, Alan Perry said a while ago that gurkhas are definitely in the pipeline although he did not give a release date. Given the subject's popularity, they may well come sooner rather than later though.

Not my painting, alas!  That was nicked from the artizan webstore.  Mine turned out like this:
