Space Apes
« on: May 21, 2009, 06:23:59 PM »

Pulp sci-fi has a long history involving monkeys/apes.  Congo's Amy, DC comics Detective Chimp and Gorilla Grodd and Monsieur Mallah, practically everyone in Planet of the Apes bar Charlton Heston, Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys, Guenther from Futurama, Mojo Jojo form The Powerpuff Girls and Davey Jones from the Monkees. All of these and many, many more have used their usually enhanced simian intelligence to stamp their opposable thumbprint on the pulp sci-fi genre.

Except Davey Jones.  Mentioning him was a "joke".

Anyway, I have recently been enjoying representing the big-monkey-space-love in my miniature painting.  After displaying SPD Science Officer Beckerman in another thread one poster gave some minor monkey related encouragement.  This was all that I required in order to display my remaining pulp sci-fi simian miniatures, all of which have been painted in the last six months or so to a gaming rather than display standard:

Dr Fossey is a super-intelligent gorilla with a jet pack, spectacles and a left wing agenda.  He is intended to be scientific support for my rather more straight laced Starmada Wing Commander Trip Hazzard (not shown).
Dr Fossey is a converted Monsieur Mallah Heroclix.

Next up is this guy, Toto.  I originally painted him for use in fantasy games but he is equally at home attacking a Federation Away Team or ruling his own post apocalyptic kingdom I think.  Toto is an off-the-peg Reaper figure.

In the interests of completeness, here are another couple of shots of SPD Science officer Beckerman.

Rounding out this installment is the childishly named Spank.  A puerile name for a puerile miniature  :D
Space monkeys with mind control helmets, spanners and ray guns are where its at as far as I am concerned.  Spank is a West Wind Superfig.

Do any of you guys have any similar figures?  I know that Reaper make the sweet looking Ape-X figure that I have my eye on.  I also have another couple of Heroclix repaints planned for down the line sometime.  Hydra Miniatures make a cool chimp sidekick figure.  There must be a lot more monkey love out there (Ape Ace springs to mind).  Any other takers?

Have you seen these ones from Eureka?

Painted one for a mate, absolutely lovely sculpts.

These ones are more in line with your others:

This is the one I did:

There was a wonderful ape gang in the Mongoose Judge Dredd range. Sadly OOP, so maybe look out for them on ebay.

West Wind has a few more ape-themed superhero figures.

Darkson Designs has their massive Kriegaffe.

Hundred Kingdoms has a King Kong type big gorilla (in their ancient roman ape range), though you can get an equally good (and same size) plastic one from Schleich.

Eureka also has fezzed winged monkeys.

Horrorclix has a failed gorilla lab experiment.

Dreamscape collectible plastics have an octorilla (gorilla with octopushead)

Pulp City has a great ape character fig.

Rackham's AT-43 prepainted plastics has a whole faction that are basically space apes.

But be careful if you go there, your wallet should hate it : too much of cheap great stuff !

I really like the Ral Partha flying primates too :

How could I have forgotten the awesome Mecha-Gor?

I too had forgotten how many ape related Superfigs there are (even though two of the guys in the first post are Dr Simian and Jump Monkey Superfigs) Mecha Gor is a particularly fun looking model.  I wonder how much shipping that model to Europe will cost once the mold is repaired?

Thanks for all of the other contributions.  I had seen some of them before but I was completely unaware of others.  Those AT43 prepaints caught me totally by surprise, I had no idea that they existed.

In addition to the Guerilla Pulp City figure they also have Chimp-chi:

Pulp city figs look nice but they seem a little pricey to me.

Those Eureka figures are definitely on my list, they really look like a fun painting project (possibly as a crew for the Mecha Gor or something?  Some day, maybe...).

Lots of stuff to drool over there, thanks!
