100 years war period setting for Dandy/Beezer/other comic?
« on: August 09, 2018, 09:04:27 AM »
In a recurring attempt to get some historicals painted, I turned to an old memory of a comic series which could have been featured in the Dandy, Beezer or possible another '70s period British comic - but the memory is sadly fragmented.
All I remember is:
1) the main character (I think!) was a rough English knight of large proportions - and probably a big black beard, not entirely unlike Brian Blessed in appearance and demeanour (possibly, I could be embellishing this with Black Adder the First recollections).
2) he may or may not have had a younger companion and a band of men with him.
3) almost certainly (but not 100% sure) set in the 100 years war.
4) it was realistically drawn, but did have a humourous element to it which might be slightly offensive to the French.
5) I don't remember the title, but I remember two expressions from one single episode - some sort of trap featuring cheeses had been set for the French, and I remember their delight on discovering this and one of their number saying 'Fine cheeses'. The other expression I clearly remember is 'Odds dismay!'. There might have been a 'gazooks' included as well, but I am less certain of this.

Could be nice to start a small warband based on these, at least if I find a suitable model for the main man - but I have to remember his origin and appearance first! Any help? Google failed me utterly this time round, and looking at series' names published in the two above-mentioned comics did not spark any memories, which means it could come from another comic entirely - although I am (almost) certain it was not the Beano or Topper... almost...

We used to get all those comics as kid. Only remember Robin hood.

We also got the Hornet, Hotspur & Warlord. Cannot remember any one like that!

Sound like a great character though!
If it isn't enjoyable, it isn't gaming!

That's just it, I can't remember any details. And I cannot find it on Google. I remember Warlord, and it wasn't in it, but didn't get Hotspur or Hornet, so that might thin the field a bit further.
Thanks. :D

Ditto.

This is annoying.
'Sir John ejaculated explosively, sitting up in his chair.' ... 'The Black Gang'.

The strip was called the "Hammer Man" and appeared in the Victor.  I have a few annuals and there are stories in both the 1985 & 86 annuals.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Victor_(comics) for a brief overview and http://www.victorhornetcomics.co.uk/puddock.html for scans etc.

Hope this helps.

Glad to help.  My logo should have been a clue that I'd be the one to answer your question.

True - although I was certain it was the Dandy!
