28mm Irish Army for the 1960's UN Mission to the Congo
« on: November 06, 2018, 01:38:18 PM »
Hello!

I'd like some suggestions for 28mm figures for the above period, most notably the Siege of Jadotville.

Remember: the dice are not your friends!

From my limited knowledge, my first thought would be Crooked Dice Army figures.

FN Rifle and British style uniform and webbing.

The problem I see is that they have long sleeves.

Yep, too much in the way of clothing, I'm after the shirtsleeves look.

I have a big, but stalled project on The Congo Crisis. If you search my username you will find them. One of them is here:

I use:
-Eureka miniatures for Aden, available from Fighting15s
-Artizan 8th army British
-warlord WW2 US Marines (you neef M1 helmets)
-TAG africans and mercenaries
-Gripping Beast MoFo
-Converted OG Boxer Reb Italians converted to Congolede
and more...

It is an interesting topic to which I hope to return some day. It was really the Jadotville movie that got me going ;)

Would you be interested in helping me out with a wargames focussed sidebar (5 - 700 words) which outlines the 28mm figures available which can be bought or converted? If so, please PM me.

Grubby tanks has some models specifically for this conflict:

They're not Irish or Britsh though...

I used Warlord Games and converted my own.

British Commandoes bodies/beret heads
USMC Arms (rolled shirt sleeves)
TAG SLR's

The USMC shoulders are a tad big for the British torsos and I leave some American weapons on and deal with it.
Yearly painting challenges only show me how useless I am at painting...

Would Warlords Gurkha bodies and arms (rolled sleeves), work with TAG SLRs and Warlord US Marines heads (M1 helmets)?

Second mention for Commando.

Have a word with John if you don't see anything, he's been talking about Jadotville and the Congo since the film came out.

I'll be catching up with him on Saturday at Targe in Kirriemuir.

So as I understand it your requirements are
Uniform; British cut in short sleeves. British pattern webbing except for Officer's side arm which is in a canvas thigh holster - style often seen in period 1920-1923 photos. Headgear wasmix of UN blue M1 liners, berets and Swedish caps.
Weapons. Webley revolver, SLR, Carl Gustav SMG, Bren and VickersMMG. Also CG84mm A/T, 60mm & at base 81mm mortar (both Brandt-Stokes).

Hope that helps in your hunt

John

Would the Warlord Eighth Army arms be useful?

If you're doing head swaps check out the MoFo Brits from Gripping Beast who do three types of beret.

Put them on the Commando Brits with a couple of M1 from Warlord for variety.
