YPU prints epic Eldar Pohenix p5
« on: August 12, 2018, 08:09:16 PM »
There has been a sudden surge of interest in Epic 40k around here, so I decided to try and 3d print some of the more enticing models out there on thingy-verse. Quite happy with the results so far!

Great tank! Would it be possible to print 6mm infantry? Just curiosity.

Lovely job on both - that Warehound's lovely looking. I know the rest of the new Titanicus has mixed opinions, but I'm really looking forward to the plastic knights. I'll be using them with 6mm, regardless of the 'scale'.

On my printer its on the edge, some details become too fine and gloop together. I think I might be able to design around it and am working on some things. I have done the knights on the right here:

(infantry on the left by irregular)

And this entire aircraft including pilot are printed

Yeah I spend most of today painting the warhound. Glueing it together was quite the ordeal but I'm very happy with the results in the end, I feel like it can more than pass for an official model when on the table.

Yeah I'm sure there will be plenty from that line to use with 6mm stuff in the end. If I remember correctly the larger epic models often were underscaled when considering their in-universe stated size, so maybe the new stuff ends up being more "true size" in the end?

Great stuff! 8)

I think IG infantry could be proxied by several different lines anyway, and I know of at least one site selling not-Necrons, not-Chaos etc infantry miniatures in 6mm.

But what is keeping me back from doing an actual Epic IG army is the absolutely ridiculous cost of even one simple Chimera.

For a sizable army, you'd need  dozens, plus dozens of Leman Russes as well. And with those models regularly going for €25,- a piece, every time building such army crosses my mind, I quickly look for the nearest available other shiny thing; anything to keep me from diving into that bottomless pit ::)

But if those could be cranked out by a 3D printer, it may become that much more realistic a goal...
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Great stuff! 8)

Thanks mate!

Yeah, that was pretty much my train of thought as well. I have quite a few pax arcadia infantry from dark realm miniatures that work just fine. (though I might need to re-base them, not enthused about that) And when the sudden burst of interest came for epic online I couldn't help myself looking at the stuff on thingyverse. What with my printers material being quite pricy its still not "free models" as some people think about 3d printing, but its quite affordable. suddenly owning a good looking warhound titan kinda surprised me! I might have just printed another superheavy tank and 3 leman russes since my last post.

BTW are you on the dutch epic facebook group yet?

I think the russes worked out quite well, the vanquisher I'm not sold on but the turrets are separate and I have files for all variants and then some.

So here is the current state of my force. At this point, I need to admit that I've never played epic armegedon so I could use some pointers on how best to turn this into a playable fun 2000-3000 point force. I fully expect I will need to print another 10 or so russes to make a tank legion for example, but I feel like I've reached a point where I need to decide a direction before spamming out another dozen random vehicles, no matter how tempting!

So my current "collection" consists of:

3 Shadowsword/Stormblade/Stormsword plus the bits to make any of them any of the 3 types

3 leman russ, I could print any variant turret if needed, or hulls without sponsons, thumper and destroyers are possible as well.

7 Chimera, I could print bolter and flamer turrets as well

2 Hydra, 2 Deathstrike
Probably a bit specialized for a starter force, but couldn't resist their more complex shapes for variety. The missiles are removable as well for keeping track of their ammo state as well!

Now infantry wise I have these dark realm infantry stands, mostly divided into 5 man fireteams and 2 man specialist teams, I figure I'm going to need to re-base some of these and I might re-paint them at that time as well if I end up going that route.

With the elite infantry especially, I clearly need to re-shuffle the MG units into the main units and work it out to 8 units so I can use them as stormtroopers.

Not pictured, but I also have a couple of imperial cruisers from battlefleet gothic, so orbital strikes are a possibility I suppose.

And finally, I'm having a hard time deciding on a paint scheme for these guys, and I would really appreciate suggestions for a good looking scheme that's not too intensive to carry through on an entire force.

These look good, I can understand why you keep wanting to print more!!

@Daethoer - have you had a look at Vanguard Miniatures for good proxies at a sensible price (and very nice models too).

As to an IG force for EA. There are a bunch of different rules (and even more army lists) under the EA banner so you probably want to check what version you will be playing. But in most the IG comes as big blocks of troops. So 10 Leman Russ is a good start, as are the Chimera to carry a company of infantry. For your Stormtroopers some Valkriye and Vultures will be good (gives some much need mobility).

A big block of artillery is very IG in EA - it can either be super effective, or a bit of a damp squib. But when it is a damp squib its because it has focused a lot of the opponent's energy onto neutralising it.

The Shadowswords are always good.

The deathstrikes are a bit silly - they either pretty much auto kill an enemy titan on the first activation, or are useless if the enemy hasn't brought any titans. Its a bit of a guess as to what your opponent will bring as to whether they will work or not. They are hugely annoying to play against, as there really isn't much of a counter to them.

Thanks Fred!

I'm still very tempted to print at least one more warhound. Pitiably there aren't any good files for reaver titans, but I might just do those myself now I'm on a roll.

I think the preference is for net EA, since that appears to be the most active community. Sticking to their less experimental lists I think I'm either down to steel legion or tank legion. I'm still unsure about those 2, since I have this bunch of infantry ready that would work in the steel legion, however, they have hardly any aces to superheavy and tank variants meaning I have less choice there. On the other hand I guess I could play steel legion now with "just" shadowswords and stock leman russes, and switch to tank legion when I have enough tanks printed and painted.

You make an interesting point on the artillery, I guess I might need to print 10 manticores or basilisks. I think I prefer the manticore look, but either is viable print wise.

Yeah I feel you on the deathstrikes. They feel a bit like fun killers. if come turn one my 150 point unit wipes your 400+ point titan that feels very anticlimactic plus it was probably the unit you were most looking forward to fielding... I'll have to see on using them or not.

I think I will mostly be playing against orks of various kinds, and while I dislike tailoring a force entirely to my opponents, I have this idea that a 3 stormsword company with a 3 hellhound and 3 griffon upgrade would become a delightful ball of BP, flamer and heavy bolters. Opinions?

My oppo has both IG and Orks - so I haven't seen the two fight each other. Could be interesting as both are quite horde like.

Orks aren't very shooty so being able to take them on at range is probably a good thing. We have tended to find that putting less well armoured stuff with good stuff, just means the good stuff tends to take a lot of Blast Markers as the chaff is killed off. I've also found trying to get units/formations that have both BP and normal shooting attacks, quite hard to get both working optimally. But give it a go, it may be a nice synergy.

Thanks for the advice Fred!

Awu, Yeah I'm kinda surprised at how easy this is going truth be! If you are still looking to play, there are quite a few models out there which (intentionally) come very close to the GW models, quality wise they are often better than the original epic models since 3d sculpting and printing has come a long way since then.

Looking fantastic so far.  I'm on the verge of starting up some Epic for HH with a friend, so I'm always looking for options and directions to go.  You've had excellent results from what I can see.

And pretty much zero effort, the files were ripe for the picking form thingyverse. The tanks are good, but that warhound titan is something else. People in other forums were doubting if it was actually 3d printed and not just a forgeworld one  lol

I'm still open to sugestions for camo schemes btw!

I'm considering that clasic green and yellow imperial guard scheme if nothing else pops to mind. Pretty much the way GW shows them still, though maybe a yellower yellow than this sand yellow.
