Loads of cool stuff Tim. Great to see you getting so many games in with the family.
As to making Kill Team simpler for new players, this is definitely worth doing. I've only played a few games so far, and while the core rules are fairly straight forward, each Team has special rules and then there are loads of tactics, the base ones, faction ones, specialism ones and scenario ones.
To start with I would suggest keeping each team fairly simple, 1 or 2 base stat lines, and 1 or 2 special weapons. Perhaps even drop down to 80pts to start with. Its worth keeping the special rules for Specialisms, and for Factions.
But I would suggest seriously limiting tactics for the first few games, perhaps to the 6 basic ones? These are pretty straight forward with a re-roll, and 3 go-first options, and what ever the other 2 are!!
I've built a Tau team, and pretty much every figure is different. This is hard work to start with, as you have to check loads of stuff. And while having read the special rules and tactics and thought about how I want the team to work, this is still loads of stuff to check and remember in game. Our Drukhari player just had Kabalites, with 2 special weapons, and I think the only tactic he used was re-rolls - and while he is an experience 40k player he didn't know kill team and he got on fine. Myself and the other player both had complex gangs, and I don't think we really got to grips with all the specials along with playing the game.
