Sabot Bases from Blue Insulation board
« on: August 16, 2018, 01:50:41 PM »
I have begun making sabot bases for my troops from blue insulation board  https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2018/08/diy-sabot-bases-using-proxxon-hotwire.html

Looking good. Very surprised that these are stiff enough with 2 layers of blue foam, but its good to hear they are.

Also surprised the foam is sufficiently stiff.  Maybe that is a different grade than what I have worked with to make Hills.

??? How did you get the wire inside the circles?
??? I am guessing a figure Base was used as a cutting guide?

Pendrake, the Proxxon cutter has a fence like a table saw for straight cuts so I simply cut blocks of foam 2"x3",  the irregular shapes I cut freehand then used the fence to cut thin slices. Then I turned the blocks on their sides and cut off thin slices using the fence.

The larger 12 figure irregular base shows some signs of needing stiffening, I will likely use a bottom layer of heavy card in the future.

The foam is standard-grade blue insulation foam, the layer of Titebond wood glue stiffens the two layers more than I thought it would.

The circles were cut using a home-made die (follow the link to see how it was done) https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2018/08/diy-sabot-bases-using-proxxon-hotwire.html

Thanks for the additional explanations. I though the scale was a fair bit larger than it is. ...penny size holes.  o_o

somebody come up with a use for all those cool circles I cut out and I will mail them to you free...

Challenge accepted.
1/ Doors set into the sides of blue foam hills (to represent Halfling Burrows). ‘Carve’ a plank pattern into them with a ballpoint pen.

2/ Texture insets for circular, lipped bases. Texture the foam first (either by rolling a rock on it to impart that texture -or- ballpoint pen again to make cobblestones). Drop it in the base.

3/ Iris doors for a SyFy setting. Add seams with ballpoint pen.

4/ Routed, Shaken, Wounded, etc. markers. Foam goes inside a Reaper 20 or 25mm RPG base (the straight sided ones) carve appropriate symbol/numbers and paint to taste.
