OGAM - A Greek answer to my Nordic project.
« on: August 20, 2018, 10:04:47 AM »
Well as i have started an OGAM project for this summer with a Nordic thema (right here), i have to field someone as an opponent.

The Greek are common but i found the way to make them more interesting for me to paint. I 'll take the Homeric period than the classic one. And the troops are more fast (and easy ?) to paint too, because i haven't to much time to spend on a new project.

Well as the background's project is placed, i have to choose the God, the Legends and the Mortals (the most easy task of the 3 categories).

The God :

I think Artemis is a good innovative option for the masterpiece of the army. The base 'll be a Reaper Bones female Giant knows as : Frost Giant Queen.
With little conversion, she 'll fit the job

more to follow

Cheers
Eric

Once again, i'll try to realise this new project with few new figurines. The objective is to use the already ones in my mountain lead/plastic miniatures.  ;)

As Artemis is a wood godess and a hunter, she will be followed by animals (wolves, dogs, and alike), Dryads and may be some light infantry (Thracians ?).

The dryads

Are based on some Repear Bones i have in stock, as

a Banshee :

some see nymphs (or look like) :

and the only true dryad :

The idea is to merge the figurines into a tree/big shrub give the look of a hidden living creature into it.

like this :

(see the excellent topic of Mason for an another way to do it  page 9)

but before anything, just collect the tools we need to build our dryads :

Then undercoat the figurines in 2 actions.

1st action : Spray a plastic primer to protect the figurines from paint. It's strange but Bones plastic is very special and can react to paint.
2nd action : coat the figurines (white for me).  ;)

Start painting now !

Enjoy
Eric

Great start. Could I suggest for the mortals (light infantry) you use Amazons. Artemis had a female followimg more than male (or at least she did in the Percy Jackson novels).  :D

You are right my friend. I forgot that !  :?

And the best of all, I still have some painted Amazon warrioress  (Foundry) lol lol

Orion was Artemis' hunting companion of legend. The Lucid Eye Cro Magnon chief would make a good representation

May be a little too much "barbarian" in the look, isn't it ? Even for a Beotian  lol lol
It seems to be that Orion was a giant  o_o
Anyway a good Legend character.

The painting step is started.

I paint the figurines as human but with some greenish reflection. Not easy as the details are not fabulous on the faces.  :(

The most of the work is on the trunks dressing with the foliage and grass.

For that, i use 3 materials :

1- Small trees ( N scale so 5 cms high) from a chinese ebayer (get 50 for +/- 2,79 euros auction !). These are good quality, but
i flock them with Woodland scenics turf with some glue-varnish. When drying, the glue makes them hardened. A plastic
primer is added, giving more hardening to the trees when dry. ;) Then the trees get the green color i want.
A tree is generaly cut in two parts in the middle. Then i give it a new shape by replacing the foliage.
Sometime i cut only small branches from the trees to add variety.
All theses parts are glue (very easily with the hotgun) on the figurines' tree/scrub trunks depending on the different poses
and scenics given by Reaper' sculptors.

2- Woodland Scenics Clump Foliage to add every where need on the trunks, ground or near the  roots .

3- Woodland Scenics Turf/Grass ;
For the basing and glue on the figurines' hair too. That's give them a more natural look. ;)

More hot glue is added on the trunk to give logical links between the branches. The trunks are repaint after that and some new foliage add to hide the imperfections due to the handling of a big glue hotgun.

The first pictures of the work, but on the most easy model because it's already a Dryad !
But that's give you an idea for the others.

enjoy
Eric

Thank you Paul.
i'm very happy too, with the final result. Not seen on the pictures because i have painted more details after the shooting.

The next problem is that i have only 4 Bones figurines to creat an unit.
As the conversion tests are good, i have to find  2 or 4 more.
And i found the solution in my figurines ' stock.....

As i'm building a cheap Project, why not re-use figurines sleeping in my attic for 10 years ?
Let's go to raid the attic and find the Heroclix box  ;D

Orion lived in the wilds, so he wouldn't be dressed in civilised attire, and in Greek (and Nordic) myth, Giants (Gigantes) varied in size from enormous to almost human in size. It means almost any appropriate miniature would do, if you wanted a token male on Artemis' team ☺️. The dryad looks cool.

To Rumacara :

Thank you ! I just need something i like to play with..... :-*

To Freelancer :
Thank you
That's the problem with Greek Mythology (and others). Giant can be ranged from any size.
i don't want to give the Artemis' army a too "amazon" look so i'll provide her with some male troops (sheperds, scout...).

To Hu Rhu :
Hope you'll like the others too.

i remember, i have all ready done some Greek Legends 10 years ago (at least) .

Cheers
Eric
