Miniature terrain by Weta
« on: August 20, 2018, 08:12:10 PM »
Just stumbled onto this; this guy at Weta Workshop got his miniature terrain highlighted by Adam Savage in a Tested video.

And it's awesome!  :o

There was talk about a kickstarter campaign too?

Anyway; enjoy! :D

It's a bit of stuff, but it's not particularly impressive.

Well I found it impressive!

It's the modularity that really blew me away.

I thought it was very good good. Agreed on the trees, absolute corkers. The modularity was great too.

My thoughts exactly. Especially in the over-all shots of the forest; it seems as if the larger tree on the left has individual leaves, and the way the light shines through is truly spectacular. I'll be rewatching that part to see if I can glimpse more clues on how he achieved that.

The modularity of the buildings is also something to take inspiration from. It's certainly something I'd like to incorporate in my own terrain projects.
The aesthetics obviously are subjective, and I might have done some things differently, but hey; he went ahead and actually did it, so no comments on that from me.

Apparently, he'll be launching a Kickstarter campaign to get the designs out to buyers in the form of 3D-printable files, which seems very interesting. It's like buying Hirst Arts moulds I suppose; one investment will yield you infinite terrain pieces. But I have no idea how old this clip is; it might be years old already. Regardless though, the ideas and inspiration are still very valid. :)

I too was impressed, though being a 'Techno-Immigrant' and not a 'Techno-Native'
it is very unlikely I will buy & use a 3d printer. Heck I have only just gotten used to
(some parts of) the Internet.  Nice stuff & I am envious.

Individual aspects of some of the pieces may not be the most impressive thing you've ever seen, but he somehow managed to create something that works on so many levels. Rarely have I seen modular pieces that are so versatile and well designed, and most importantly, barely look modular. No fixed (i.e. non-modular) creation can match the possibilities, while no modular pieces matches the looks. That combination is very impressive without a doubt. Designing buildings that look different from all angles so that identical ones won't look repetitive is rather amazing too. As is designing them in ways that allow so much flexibility, from so few mass-producable pieces.

And those trees.  :-*

And the medieval Falcon. Would love to see how that turns out.

Thanks for sharing. Even after seeing lots of behind-the-scenes footage from the Lord of the Rings movies, I wasn't this tempted to go on a pilgrimage to the Weta studios. I'm just afraid that once I'm there, I will never want to leave...

I've seen better dungeons and cities, sure, but these are still quite nice and more than serviceable. The natural features, like the trees and hills are excellent.

I have to agree with most comments here,

the buildings are charming but individually not the best out there. The modularity is great since each piece does work on its own and look good together.

Overal though I think its definitely a case of a whole greater than the sum of its parts, the entire table has a feel and style to it that we often do not manage to capture in our terrain.

I think the impressive thing for me is the blend of utility and artistry. It's not quite at the top level of display and painted glory, but then it's not a diorama, it's a working gaming table.

The trees are spectacular and the foliage he uses for branches and on the ground … I'd love to know what it is.
