Marinus Willett, who led the sortie from the fort, was quite a character. He served in the French and Indian War. After that he became a cabinet maker in New York City. During the riotous times before the revolution, he was a prime rowdy and street fighter for the radical Sons of Liberty. Entering the Continental army during the war, he fought at many places as well as Oriskany. Later in the war he was made militia commander for the Mohawk Valley and turned the situation around, going from passive defense to counterattacks and pursuits of Tory and Indian raiders.

Fascinating article.  The constant confusion over Butler's Rangers, by the way, is because people confuse it with the actual unit of that name formed after the St Leger expedition.  That unit did not exist at the time (nor did the uniform associated with it), but Butler was indeed commanding "ranging" troops in earlier campaigns.
No plan survives first contact with the dice.
