SF scenery WIP
« on: September 05, 2018, 11:36:10 AM »
Picked up at Hammerhead: SF scenery pieces from Dave's Wargames.
This is going to be a Maintenance Bay for a small spaceport
My first piece of MDF scenery, so painting it is an experimental process. I spray painted it all black both sides (took a whole can to get good coverage) and then dabbed cheap acrylic red from poundland on with a sponge to get a mottled effect. I got my kids to help me with this, it was right up their street.

The first coat just soaked straight into the black and went brown. After 3 applications it was showing the red enough so I have assembled it.

I plan to add some random splodges of green and yellow and then drybrush all the edges with gunmetal.

comments welcome

It is looking the high side of outstanding.  The metal highlight will bring out the detail and make it really ping.  My only comment is that the surfaces of the girders could use some more details to break them up.  On MDF kits with girders I have added bolts and rivets.  I picked up one of these last year and have been adding small details to various kits.  http://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/inicio/541-silicone-molds-rivets.html
If you look at the base of these radar dishes you can see the bolts.  They just add a bit of detail on the flat MDF.

Again nice build and it was from a company that I have not heard of.  Looking at a couple of kits now.

Thanks Snitchy! And many thanks for the tip about the rivet mould.

Looking good, can't wait for it to appear on a Sci-Fi game-board,
Rogue Stars or (if we can get hold of a copy) Galactic Heroes (FFoL in Space).
A while ago I purchased some 'puffy' paint, as someone on LAF said it could
be used to give the effect of bolts. You are welcome to have one to try out.
I have not yet gotten round to experimenting with it.

Puffy paint? I can't imagine what you mean.

its a gel paint used on fabric. It is thick so dries raised. Its used quite a bit in the scale modelling world for faking welding joints in 1/35th armour.
