Mud Huts
« on: September 05, 2018, 05:10:00 PM »

Hello.

I just finished the first of eight mud huts I'm currently working on.

Walls and roof are made of papier mâché, with stripes of coloured paper added for the straw on the roof. The door frame is made of green stuff.

Cheers, Karl

It looks right. How tedious was it to stick down all the paper strips? (Wondering if a similar technique would make a passable thatched Euro style cottage.)

Nice work.

Just wondering: When gluing on single 'straws', anyway, why not use brush hairs or something similar?

Thanks a lot for your kind comments, gentlemen.

I used casein paint (PLAKA Farbe) and a sponge to paint the wall.

It takes some time to cut out the stripes of paper and glue them to the roof. I'm using wallpaper paste to do it.

I think you could get a more realistic look using a different material instead, like brush hairs, but I like working with paper. A lot of my wargaming terrain is made of papier mâché and paper.

I think the technique would work fine for thatched roof cottages. Would love to try it out.

Cheers,
Karl

Awesome job! I love the look and feel. I shall have a go myself, though I'm sure they won't look as good as yours when I'm done. These would look great on our jungle table.

Thank you!

I think it took me about half an hour to paint the wall.
I used a sponge to do it.

it looks as if it took you 4 hours [with or without a sponge  the result is fantastic]

For thatched roofing I use fake fur...soak it down VERY well with watered down white glue.  When it dries I paint it a dark brown and highlight/ dry brush lighter shades.
