« on: September 17, 2018, 04:59:52 PM »
I thought it would be worth starting a discussion thread knowing how well Gringos40 Tonkin range has been received to look at rules, basing, table layouts etc......So please comment on any thoughts you may have.?

For basing , i always like to have bases with some minies , not individual basing

For the rules, i have to study, but i think about Din of Battle (Piquet, and i like the Piquet rules) wich have army musters for Tonkin war and Boxer rebellion, or maybe TMWWBK !?

A friend of mine told me about Black Powder, but seems to need a lot of minies !

Yes like you I favour multi bases, waiting for some 50mm by 50mm to arrive was thinking 4 bases represent a company 2-3 figs a base,
I have not however discounted individual bases 12 man units 30mm rounds, May use movement trYs

I have used my Boxer rebellion figures for Tonkin games in the past. I have played The Sword & the Flame since it first came out. I find that it works just fine for this theatre & period.

All the existing material are diaries written in French, most can be found on Amazon some can be found on the internet as free ebooks... There is a book currently being written which will be the first comprehensive military history in English. There is an Osprey on French Naval and Colonnial troops, this however in my opinion is lightweight and misses most of the 1883-1886 period

Pending Ged's own rules I will be exploring Sharpe Practice and am building up small company-sized units on 2p coins mounted on various sabot bases. Much of the skirmishing and operations involved small composite forces involving naval landing parties; Marine Infantry, Annamites etc - so a huge scope for variety.
I have long thought France's colonial wars were a much overlooked period - perhaps less so in the States than here - but Ged looks to be single-handedly tackling that.
What about the early wars to colonise Algeria - that really would be a colourful conflict.
