« on: September 30, 2018, 08:13:19 PM »
Guys the Thule gamers are having their annual open day this Saturday 6th October. The venue is the Isleburgh center in Lerwick from 11 to 4.
If you happen to be in the area!

The group gathered at 9 on a cold and crisp Shetland morning. The hall was quickly prepared and we sate back and waited. We had a large Bolt action Vietnam game. A wonderful Star wars assault on Hoth game. Also Gladiators, Dungeons and Dragons, Magic the gathering and a young but enthusiastic pair demoing 40K. I did a walk up Conquest of Mars HOTT game.

I lost count as was gaming but I reckon we had maybe 50 members of the public who came in had a chat, a look round and were persuaded to stay and have a game.
I had 5 back to back HOTT games mostly with young kids to whom VSF and HOTT were complete unknowns. Spent ages explaining the concepts and troop types.
The highlight of the day however was convincing my wife to play. A first after 22 years together.

That's fantastic and it's great you got so many visitors and participants from such a limited pool of residents! Of course, the big question is, did they put you in a box?

How big is the local gaming community?

Thanks guys we are out of the box and staying out of it!

Tricky to say how many gamers there are as we are uncovering more all the time. Our Facebook page has over 50 members. We regularly get 20 on a club night. Considering we started 10 years ago with three members this is not bad going.
There are two other organised gaming groups in Shetland. A Games workshop based group some of who also play at our club. There is also a Roleplaying group who meet in a local Cafe to play every week.
Added to this there are quite a few groups of friends who meet up regularly in each others home to game who would never dream of coming to a club.
I think we do pretty well for a population of just over 20,000.
