No love for wolves? Where have all the wolf miniatures gone?
« on: October 02, 2018, 06:52:49 PM »
Large, savage wolves, dire wolves, wargs are a staple of fantasy stories and yet it seems hard to find decent sculpts in 28mm.
Thunderbolt Mountain is gone, Red Box and Ebob don't produce theirs any more.  Dark Sword have good models but somewhat pricey to get a whole pack.  Otherworld's are too friendly looking.  Reaper have a good warg, but their other wolves don't look as well sculpted.  Game Zone's look nice but there have been a few comments around that they are not a reliable company to deal with - is this true? And GW have Fenrisian wolves and wargs.

Are there any other wolves out there?
What are Game Zone like to deal with?  Are the problems only around Hero Quest or are they more general?

Well, aside from what you've listed West Wind has these:

I really have no idea what I'm doing.

Not sure if that is of any help right now but apparently they are producing Wolfriders for the Goblin forces in Oathmark so it seems quite likely that we will be getting some nice looking wolves suited for classic fantasy settings soon-ish.

Iron Wind Metals in the USA or Ral Partha Europe? Ral Partha used to do a nice wolf pack at one time...

You can still get these fellows (painted here by John Blanche, as displayed on the Eldritch Epistles blog) from RPE. Discard the riders!

I've just recently got a bunch of the above wolves mentioned by Hobgoblin and while they are great sculpts they are more the size of an actual wolf so probably quite small for what you are wanting. I think I have a painted one shown here on LAF somewhere.
Here is the picture (very small in the middle by the dice showing 2)
I also have the top pack of wolves from Westwind. They are big guys but not huge so may be what you are after. A little cartoony though.

Alternative Armies supply wolves only, if you look at the Goblin cavalry.

The Hobbit wargs are very nice IMO, if bit expensive.

Thanks guys.  As far as size, aesthetics and ease to get in New Zealand the GW wolves are probably the way to go.  I do like the Game Zone ones but I have some reservations about dealing with that company (from what I have read).
Strangely, I can get the Fenrisian wolves here, but the Fell Wargs seem a harder prospect.  I don't like the look of the wild wargs.

My concern with GW wargs/wolves is that some are attached to the base by only one or two paws.   Does this make them fragile?

I can second the Iron Wind ones; they look good, are a good size (think real life pony or thereabouts) and there are 6 unique sculpts in a pack of 6.

As for the GW Fenrisian Wolves and Wargs; yes some are only connected to the base at just one point, but as long as the original connection point was not cut off, it is remarkably strong.

I've not experienced any breakages, even with a whole bunch of second hand Wargs (with riders) squished into a slightly too small box for storage.

As long as you handle your miniatures with the same care you would any other minis, I'd label this a non-issue... :)
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...
