Piquet and The Italian Wars in Olicanaland
« on: October 04, 2018, 05:19:27 PM »

https://yarkshiregamer.blogspot.com/2018/10/piquet-and-italian-wars-in-olicanaland.html

A few weeks ago I got to visit James in nearby Olicanaland and have a game with his cracking Italian Wars collection (plus a guest appearance from some YG units).

It was my first game of Piquet too, a quite old set of rules which played very well, I will definitely give them another go.

The post discusses the rules and the game but if you can't be bother to read there are lots of nice pictures.

Mixed fortune for the Yarkshire Gamer contingent, the Borgia Gendarme excelled, the Swiss Pike not so well.

Great report, I read all the way through and realised I'd not looked at the pictures. So went back just to look at the splendid eye candy.

Interesting write up of the Piquet mechanisms, not a rule set I have played either. But the activation and initiative system is certainly interesting.

Looks fantastic! I'll bookmark your blog to read later....

Your pikemen look great, very grim and no nonsense compared to his more colourful troops - I like.

The crossbowmen in the foreground of the top pic - do you know what make they are? Old Glory, or Front Rank?

Cheers, mine and James' style are quite different but quite complementary.

As for the make of the Crossbow I will have to defer to James as they are not mine, hopefully he will pop on here and advise.

Great looking game, wonderful troops and terrain.

Piquet is a superb set of rules which unfortunately seems to attract a lot of ill informed hatred.

Great AAR. James was kind enough to mail me this ruleset a few years back but I never got around to playing it. Maybe I should give it another look. At the moment we don't have quite enough models for a full game. We need more cavalry, both light and heavy. My regular opponent hates painting horse, so I am stuck with the task.

As for renaissance rules I have had my eyes on Field of Glory Renaissance for some time. I bought the rules when they came out but have only played it a few times and only once with Italian Wars. I like the rules a lot, however. Especially the "nonsense movement" system (as opposed to P&S no-nonsense) that makes deployment very important and the difference between Impact combat and sustained melee combat.

Very detailed and rule heavy definitely has its place in my book!

Cheers
Erik

Cheers everyone,

Erik they are definitely worth digging out and giving a go if you have them. Tell your opponent that he only has to paint a tiny fraction of the horse as most of it will be covered in Armour  lol

Great report and explanation of the rules. I have had them for years, but never decided myself to try them. Maybe I will now. Thanks!

Fields of Glory: Renaissance is a very good set (better than the ancient set IMO).
I like many features of Piquet - the card activation and initiative system.
What I don't like is the multiple dice sizes rolling off against each other. I find it clunky and you can get some really odd extreme results.
What I'm waiting for is the Renaissance version of 'For King & Parliament'
