Varnish woes
« on: October 05, 2018, 07:40:23 AM »
After painting I allways varnish my models with a layer of GW Purity Seal followed by a layer of Testor's Dullcoate.
I've done this on hundreds of minis without problem.
Last night it went wrong on some minis: some parts of the miniature have a milky sheen on them. Something like a fog in the layer of dullcoate (but not all parts).
a) how did this happen?
b) what can I do about this?

Cheers for helping me out wiht this one

a) Matt varnish can go cloudy if humidity is high when you apply it
b) Applying another coat of varnish on top usually clears the problem

That is correct. If a second mat coat does not work, a gloss coat will almost always clear up the white-ish film.

Then you can re-apply the matt coat :)
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

I tried sacrifying a black cockrel at midnight before the application. It did not help. Then a switched from Testors spray-on to a brush-on matt medium. Made all the difference in  the world. To summarize ,matt sprayons are fickle and climate dependant.

Agreed, there is no sense to it.

.....however, try warming the can in some hot water before spraying and also get a 18 year virgin to bless your varnish beforehand. I live in Wales, so there is no way I can find one.

I believe there are more threads about this problem on wargaming forums than about any other topic, it has even happened to me  :'(

I switched to brush-on varnish afterwards, it's just safer and only takes a little more time.

Never happened to me, but I got sick of all the fumes.

Now I brush on a good gloss varnish first. Then I brush on a non-toxic mate varnish. I use vallejo for the mate varnish. No fumes... how nice.

And no problems with clouding when I use a brush... ever. However, do make sure it doesn't puddle too much, just in case.
