Suggestions for Fantasy 'Scots'...?
« on: October 05, 2018, 04:47:41 PM »
I am planning a Celt force for Of Gods and Mortals and have an idea in mind for a theme, which be more fantasy based than historical (hence the posting on this board rather than Myths, Gods etc) and am aiming for a kind of fantasy 'Scots-ish' look, with kilts being important for the vibe.

I know of the Confrontation and Celtos figures that may well work but wondered if anyone had any other suggestions.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions for this idea.
 :D

Were there not kilted minis in the metal GW LotR ranges, some of the Wild men minis had cloth over shoulder wraps that could be painted tartan ? :)

If you're going 'ancient' there wouldn't have been any kilts as such so you could really do what you liked. As it's fantasy you could add a bit of tartan for character. Some of the miniatures with cloth wraps around them could be used to represent a feileadh-mor, which was wrapped around the body and over the shoulder. Some of the late 80's Jes Goodwin elves would work for that.

NorthStar have recently got hold of the old Alternative Armies fantasy Celts, that were originally intended as a fully licenced Slaine range. They're possibly my favourite fantasy Celt dudes of all time and would be a great option.

Thanks for the suggestions, chaps.

I am using Slaine for some of the inspiration but would like to take it down an even 'darker' route, if possible.
I shall check out those ranges and see what might work as I am open to a little conversion if needs be.

Those Elves could work really well, actually.
A very original and left-field call.
I like it.
 :D

Good news on those AA Celts, I shall check them out too.
Cheers.
 :)

If you want to go further afield, there's the Trollbloods from Hordes, who generally have a highlander vibe, especially the Kriel subfaction:

A lot of dwarf miniatures have a Scottish vibe, but especially West Wind Highland dwarves - complete with sporran and bagpipes.
Black Tree have Picts with the over the shoulder cloth/wrap.

Yup, these are the ones that I am going to be using for my OGAM army when I eventually get round to it. Lovely figures, very Bisley era Slaine.

I've just checked on the NorthStar site and they only have a few of them up as yet, but are planning to release some of the rest in the future, maybe as limited releases (but presumably, that all depends on how they sell).

What about the Celtos line from Brigade Models

If I ever did Slaine that would be my starting point for minis

Thanks for the new suggestion, chaps.

Fram: Those Hordes figures certainly have the right vibe but are too big, I reckon, although one of two of the characters could work as Legends maybe.
 :)

I cannot find the Celts on the NorthStar site.....

As for the Celtos range: I agree and may end up going that route but some of the weapons are a little too large for my liking, although conversions would not be too taxing.

As for the Dwarf option: I agree but may have difficulty justifying them. Although I am shoehorning a tartan wearing Minotaur in, so maybe I could.
 ;)

Hmmm....choices, choices...

I'd just like to make the obligatory friendly reminder that Kilts were not worn until the 16th century.

These are all they have for now, but maybe Nick can shine a little more light on when/if/how the rest of the range will be released?
