Spaceship numbering?
« on: May 13, 2019, 06:57:21 PM »
I've got s lot of the starships. mostly Brigade Models and GZG. I haven't found any sort of numbers or letters that are small enough to go on the black plastic bases. I'm looking for a way to put a designation number on their bases and am wondering what other people do.
Jane! Stop this crazy thing!

Old style lettraset rub-on numbers are good. And they come in many colours and fonts

Type up what you want (Numbers, names etc.) for your fleet. Print it off.
Cut them out. Best to use a sharp craft knife & a steel ruler, though it is
possible to get the numbers on to mini discs with careful use of a hole punch,
the office thing for putting holes in the side of sheets of paper.
Glue them on. I find a thin spread of a pva glue works well, then varnish over when dry.
The advantage of this system, apart from being cheap, is that you can use
different fonts & icons.

You might want to try some of the decals from 15mm WW2 minis like Flames of War.

I plan to use those for my new Cold Navy ships.

I'm also trying to find some good icons that don't look too obviously Space Marine-ish, though that size is perfect.  Maybe those Howling Griffons could look like national or fleet markings.

Good luck, and please post your results, I'd love to see them.

On this note, does anyone know of any decals of "fruit salad" ribbons that would fit a model starship, say 5-7 mm long?

I refer to those chest ribbons on military uniforms.  Sometimes real-life ships get those and an extra star or number next to it.  Could look cool on a Cold Navy starship.

The dry-transfer (rub on) lettering decals work great, and come in all sorts of sizes.
The model railroading ones sometimes come in scales. I've seen Z scale ones that I just have to trust are actual letters, because they're so small they just look like dots to me.

A "normal" pack usually has several sizes on a sheet.

Got any links to your favorite z-scale transfers?
