I got some of these figures as samples today and I'm glad I can tell you the actual castings look much better than the boxart suggests. The sculpting is very classic like old Reaper or RAFM style from 10 or so years ago. This suits the background very well, at least for my taste. Detail is excellent, clear and crisp, good facial expressions especially for the females with many of them looking rather cute.
The flow of the clothing is also good and the slightly caricature style fits the bill.
Also a positive surprise it the size, the figures easily match up with todays standards with the average human being 28mm feet to eye. Size varies with females often a touch smaller and thinner than males and special figures like the Mummy come to a whooping 35mm feet to head. Bases are rougly 3mm high so you need to add this to the size.
Also very good is the headless horseman including his horse.
Bases are cast on as it was announced. The texture is sculpted on and varies from figure to figure, most have sand, some have wooden planks or cobblestone. Personally I'd have prefered the bases as cast extras with the option to use different bases for them but as complete one piece castings they save the extra basing work and you can start with preping and painting right on.
I'm still not clear on the rim that is part the bases (painted black in the pictures) and would have prefered them without this feature.
Considering the US pricetag of 26USD a set with the option to save 40% using an armycard they are a steal and worth every cent considering the overall quality.
