M3 Grant tank turret hatch question
« on: October 28, 2018, 05:08:09 PM »
I just cannot seem to find a clear photo: do the two halves of the commander's hatch at the top of the Grant turret open to each side, or one forward and one backwards?
The M3 Lee seems to have the forward/backward split, but I am not so sure about the Grant.
Any help is welcome - I am assembling some 15mm scale models without any good pic to guide me.
Thanks.
PS the Wikipedia pic showing British Grant and Lee side by side seems to show sideways opening on the Grant, but it's not too clear still.

Looks like it's sideways-ish:

As with the Sherman, it's a rotating cupola.

So it doesn't matter then? I hadn't realised that! Thanks 8)

It depends which way the TC is looking through the periscope when closed, not so important when he's up top with the hatches open.

That's right. :) With the Sherman it also incorporated an AAMG mount, but as Arlequin says, the primary reason was so the commander could rotate the periscope. incorporated into one of the hatches.
