Coastal Action - Miniature suppliers
« on: November 03, 2018, 02:40:46 PM »
I wondered if it would be useful to list suppliers (and anything else useful...) for those like me, starting  in a new period/genre - driven by the recent Warlord WWII Coastal pre-release of course...

I'd be very interested if anyone can add to the list, which has been shamelessly stolen from these threads:
Rich H
robh - includes reading suggestions.

So (assuming this might be useful to someone);

Warlord
1/300. Pre-order for relaease in December.
British, German, Italian, Soviet, American and Japanese.
Rules available: Cruel Seas
Mix of coastal small patrol craft (two classes per navy), larger flotilla support - minesweepers, armed trawlers etc, and merchantmen.

Heroics and Ros
1/600 (ex-Skytrex) and smaller range of 1/300.
Same spread of nationalities as Warlord
Extensive range of coastal vessels; small craft, including variations within classes, armed trawlers, paddlesteamers, merchantmen, ferries and ships from Corvette up to Cruiser, plus submarines.
Also includes aircraft and port/harbour facilities, trains, trees and buildings.

PT Docyard
1/600  for both WWI (Splinter Fleets) and WWII coastal forces.
Major Axis and Allied navy's plus Finnish, Yuogoslav/Partisan, Roumanian, Hungarian, Polish, Dutch and Norwegian boats - pretty comprehensive then...
Rules available: Flakfighter II, White Water, Red Tide (RCW) and free downlaod of Hunters on the Shoreline/Silent Approach.
Extensive range of coastal vessels, small craft and numerous variations, larger flotilla support such as drifters and trawlers, plus escorts, minesweepers, tenders, tugs and merchantmen.

Gaming Mats - if you're after something fancy, what might be useful for northern waters at night are:
Tiny Wargames
Cigar Box

Ship bases/Markers.
Beyond the MDF & clear acrylic suppliers (Warbases are excellent), Im not aware of any suppliers of pre-made 'sea bases' or topedo tracks etc. in this scale.

First stop for literature for me is ABE Books
UK/European, North American, Indian and New Zealand booksellers. Great place to find anything - be aware stupid prices are driven by an algorithim, I have found this drops to something realistic after a several months of no sales...

An addendum to Heroics & Ros to allay any confusion:

The "Coastal Forces" grouping is the old Skytrex ships, so 1/600.

The "Landing Craft & Ships" grouping is 1/300.

There also suitable plastic kis from a range of Japanese and Chinese manufactuters in 1/700 and 1/350. Pit Road, Hobby Boss, Aoshima, Tamiya and Trumpeter to name just a few.  The principle focus is Pacific but you can find a lot of useful kit for European scenarios as well. This is complemented by a lot of kit being produced on Shapeways.

Trumpeter and Hobby Boss produce extensive ranges of naval aircraft, in both 1/700 and 1/350 some relatively obscure but none the less important, like the Blackburn Skua. Pit Road produce mixed boxes of Luftwaffe and RAF and at one stage IIRC Tamiya produced 1/700 Heinkels, I still have one ir two floating about somewhere.

As 1/700 is the most popular scale for naval modelling, you’ll find no end of accessories like small boats and harbour terrain, cranes, warehouses and the like.

If you fancy going small there are 1/1200 options or smaller still, GHQ and CinC produce exquisite 1/2400 kits. Not sure if there are S-boats in this scale but PT boats, corvettes, Torpedo boats, aircraft and every kind of merchant ship with detail levels that often exceed those of the 1/600 ranges.

Rod Langton has a small range of 'Napoleonic' 1/300 http://www.rodlangton.com/ but the small craft are adaptable to other eras. He also has a small 1/200 WW1 coastal range.

He also has a great 1/1200 range including scenery if you're in the mood for that.

Just had a quick squint - carley floats, ships boats and search lights if you fancy some 1/600 detailing bits. Out of the shed loads of 1/700 there are some torpedos that could just about sit in for trackers.

Couldn't see any useful figures on a gallop through the Baccus or Irregular ranges though  ;)

Tumbling Dice for 1/600 aircraft and some naval craft and accessories, several ranges covering all airforces involved.

Any source for 1/600 WWII torpedoes to use as markers? Shapeways doesn't have them.

(I know -- I can make my own...)

Are the Heroics & Ros ships (old Skytrex) metal or resin?

Thanks
