What rules would suit a Block war-style game?
« on: November 05, 2018, 11:11:56 AM »
Myself and a few of the lads are thinking about our next joint gaming project.  I like the idea of a 2000AD Blockwar game ie two opposing forces duking it out with a huge gulf between them.

Any suggestions as to what rules/system might make such a setting come alive?

There was actually a Block War PDF for the Warlord/Mongoose Judge Dredd Miniatures Game, if you can find them.

For bigger forces and fast play, I'd take a look at Wars of Insurgency.

I’m thinking that AK-47 with custom pre-game “political manoeuvre” charts could make for a good game.

I'm looking to use Fistful of Lead: Galactic Heroes for my Dredd games. Although FfoL normally only uses 5-6 figures per player, the new Grunts rule allow you to field a groups of 3 lower quality figures to replace one normal figure. The Hordes trait replaces more figures, which could represent juve gangs and Citi Def squads.

I used Dragon Rampant to game a block war. It's surprising how well the rules translate to scifi.

Might be worth having a look at FUBAR.

Free and literally one page rules. I am planning on picking them out to use again soon. I find that you can easily hack it about a bit if needed.

Not sure if they are easy to find anymore by Akula did some mighty fine rules as well that used to be on his blog. Not sure if they are there anymore or whether you'd need to nudge him for them. They'd be super easy to play around with a bit to work for a block war.

Where did you read/hear that? Afaik Dredd stuff is last on the list and the next 2000AD thing is Slaine.

Yeah, that sort of loads of crappy guys hurling ineffective fire at one another thing... Kind of rank and file but vertical... Good call

Almost anything would work if you tweaked it right. I guess it would depend on how you were planning on playing. If you like old school maybe Laserburn if you want something a bit more modern many of the current raft of Post apocalypse rules could probably be turned into  a half decent game. Scrappers maybe. Not of these do the larger numbers that you might find in a block war tho.
