AKULA’s Game of Thrones - pg64 back from the dead
« on: November 05, 2018, 04:16:57 PM »

I’ve finally been tipped over the edge, after having played Captain Blood’s GoT game at BLAM a couple of weeks back, and then rereading so many of the inspirational threads on LAF.  My project will probably end up being a blending of TV series & books in terms of the look (probably more the former than the latter).

No idea on rules yet...quite liked the feel of the game at BLAM, but I tend to play mass skirmish, and so may write a simple set at some point - for now though I want to get some figures on a table, and I’m about SEVEN YEARS behind some of you lot!!!

(Edit) - have added a page index to help if you are skipping through looking for the start of a particular House.

As I’m only a couple of days ride south of the Wall, I’m going to start with some Northerners, Bolton’s, and then Starks plus retainers.

Thoughts on the look I’m going for:

House Bolton

My first bunch of figures will represent Household troops, so I’m going for a fairly regimented look, as I’m working on the basis that the Armourer/Smith at Dreadfort churned out a basic design for the Houseguard - additional retinues will be far more of a mix in terms of look and gear.

Being Northerners, there won’t be a huge amount of metal armour, so the emphasis is upon padded gambesons which would not only be cheaper but also warmer. Unlike some of the other Northern Houses, I’m not going to give them too much in the way of fur - I figure that Roose/Ramsey wouldn’t be too fussed about comfort for their troops. The Officers can afford to embellish their gear and it will help them stand out from the rank and file.

First wave, undercoated, and ready to paint - the figures are mostly Crusader Miniatures, with minimal tweaks as they fit perfectly the look I had in mind...other forces will require a lot more mixing of the various plastics.

The long spear/pikemen will have shields/pavise (once I either find some I like, or make a bunch) - I really like the look from the end of Season 6. I figure these are household troops, so are better drilled in close quarters, while some of the retainer/vassals will provide more rough and ready forces with a greater variety of equipment and weapons, regular spears, axes etc.

Plenty of bowmen

The horse will be largely armed with lance, to deliver a decisive shock, or chase down a broken enemy....I don’t see the Bolton’s as being very big on skirmishing, unless it is to capture a few prisoners to torture.

Group shot, undercoated and ready for painting

Will have a play about with the paint scheme - I like the grim dark look of the TV series, but I’m thinking of getting the pink/washed out red in as well...that said, I prefer the TV shields to the pink on red.

Next on the todo list will be officers/leaders (with fur cloaks), and then some more rough and ready looking retainers or some equally rough-looking Starks.

Good to see another person drawn down the rabbit hole! Looks like you've got a nicely thought through aesthetic - how are you planning to paint them?

Based on past experience....SLOWLY.

 :D ;)

I did originally think to just go down the route of the TV series (ie Northern = grey/dark grey/brown) but I’m going to try and incorporate some washed out red/pink into the scheme - I don’t want to go the full pink/red combo, as I don’t have Capt. Blood’s skill or patience with a brush.

The shields will owe more to the TV heraldry, than the books, and I might cheat and use transfers.

Will paint up a test piece and see what it looks like.

 :)

Welcome aboard!

I like the regimented look you're going for for the Boltons. I tend to imagine that the smallfolk in Roose's levies are pretty anxious about staying in line so they keep things highly drilled (or else!). Plus, bonus points because I've got a soft spot for kettle helms!

Will you be doing named-characters like Roose/Ramsay (or Steelshanks as an officer?) by the way?

Thanks, hopefully it will gel together when I get around to painting the levies.

My aim for now is to produce some officers/minor noble types...if they end up looking like they would suitable for named characters, then happy days.

I try not to, but I’ve got a bit of catching up to do..I mean SEVEN YEARS just to get started.

 :)

Oh wow. That certainly is a running start.

I wouldn’t go that far...after all I’ve just undercoated them - actually painting them is something else entirely.

Matt, in Germany we say “Was lang währt, wehrt endlich gut”. So seven years of planning is a secure way to make it right...

lol great start and I like your miniature choice. I wonder if this means Captain Blood will be starting a zombie project?

First few test pieces - still plenty of work needed, including tidying up the shields and the base colour (which i haven’t decided upon yet) - just wanted to give you an idea of the colour scheme.

I’ve gone with the flayed skin pinky/washed out red tunic, but with a dark grey gambeson...sort of Wehrmacht meets Hello Kitty.

Freehand shields...need tidying up still

I find my figures look MUCH better the further away the camera is....

....or hidden behind battlements

Looks good, it's a nice balance between show and book appearance.
