Hi!

In Medieval Warfare Volume VIII Issue 5 is an article about the Japanese and Spanish in the Philippines. And there is an article on the website https://digital-commons.usnwc.edu/nwc-review/vol69/iss4/10/

Does anybody have Non-Turnbull sources about this episodes?

Cheers

Wellington

I assume that you are also discarding all of Turnbull's sources?

No, I like Turnbull. But I would be nice to have other sources.

one of the main issues at work is that we have few military historians (already a species on the verge of extinction) that specializes on the far east, mainly due to the language barrier... at the same time we have few military historians in the mainstream anglo-saxon academia  who really look at Spanish topics (because Spain seems unattractive and backward... never mind that it was a major power until the end of XVIII century...). Then  academic journals are quite unwilling to publish new articles from new researchers (actually it should be said that some peer-reviewers actively try to prevent new material to get in print to avoid losing their monopoly on a subject).  But looking at jesuit archives could be a good starting point.

Giraldez, A., 2015  The Age of Trade: The Manila Galleons and the Dawn of the Global Economy. Rowman and Littlefield: Lanham,MD.  peripherally discusses the Japanese in the Philippines. The discussion focuses on trade. I believe that there is some discussion on conflict, piracy and the movement of the Christian Japanese population to Manila after the ban. A very interesting book in general.

"The Economic Aspects of the History of the Civilization of Japan", Vol 1 (of 3), published 1930, has lots interesting tidbits...

A few years ago, I was lucky enough to find a print copy at a good price. This digitized version appears to be complete.
