All the above suggestions are great.

I would suggest simply cutting out some thick card pieces in whatever style suits your plans and sticking those to the bland mdf before painting, then texture it with pva, sand and paint mix to get some detail on it.

If you want some Pegasus bits for detailing, then I can send you some, mate.

As for creepers, I just stick 'underbrush' to the sides with pva (it takes a while to dry!), coat in cheap superglue to harden it and then drybrush it....
