Saga Book of Battles
« on: December 06, 2018, 10:42:53 AM »
Just got this yesterday.I've read through it now, and I'm most impressed. As well as lots of scenarios you get rules for rivers, baggage, livestock, night fighting, buildings, alternative victory conditions, alternative terrain deployment system.
First section is a way of mixing up the 'standard' scenario with players getting to choose scenery, or deployment or victory conditions.
Second section is 10 scenarios suitable for competition games, including baggage escort, river crossing, treasure retrieval and so on.
Third section is 3 scenarios more likely to be unbalanced but which will be great for casual play
Fourth section is 3 multi-player scenarios
Final section is rules to link games into a mini-campaign.

There's probably several years of play to try everything in this book. It's a steal at the price and every Saga player should have a copy.

Got mine. Looks good. Wish they hadn’t put all the Fantasy photos in it. Not interested in that at all and it disrupts the feel of the book for me. I always liked how thematic the books were before and seeing a picture of a wizard fighting a manticore is jarring. I understand their desire to do a universal system but keep the Fantasy separate please for those of us who want a historical wargame. YMMV.

The fantasy is separate, it will be a completely separate book. Why complain about a few pictures in a universal book, for a style of gameplay you aren't going to play.

I know this question has nothing to do, but when is the fantasy book going to be out? also, will it be an universal system or limited to a fantasy world created by the author?

It's an odd stance for an era when belief in the fantastic was never stronger. If you could show a Dark Age guy the images, I'm sure most would claim to know of someone who had witnessed the real event or one similar to it.

I'm not a fantasy gamer, but a few photos is not exactly Ragnarok.  ;)

My understanding is it will be a generic fantasy setting, enabling you to utilise armies of your own creation, built around a battleboards style of play eg: hordes - could be massive collection small weak troops like goblins, ratmen, halflings etc etc.

The general suspicion is a release for approximately Salute (april) in 2019.

However - None of this is confirmed in any way, and so could all be fake news as yet.

Nice to see such favorable reviews. I have to admit that I was a little miffed by my perception of basic rules being spread over two books. It has moved up my list of must purchase books.

Like I said, I don’t like it, and I’m pretty sure I explained why. You don’t mind, and that’s OK too  o_o

I listened to part of a SAGA podcast that reviewed the Book of Battles and talked about Age of Magic.
They said there would be 6 factions but the  factions would be generic, just as ducat posted.

I have seen a picture of the back of the Age of Magic book that comfirms this, but I cant find the image now. The best I can do is this (HUGE) image of the french version:

Google translate:
"Les factions represent les principaux archétypes de la fantasy plutôt qu' une race ou une culture precise"
= "Factions represent the main archetypes of fantasy rather than a specific race or culture"

I believe the generic faction types are roughly on these lines:

Otherworld, Undermountain, Great Kingdoms, Horde, Undying, Wild.

You pick a board and build an army to it.

So a bunch of goblins and trolls would probably work nicely for Undermountain, or Horde.

There is nothing to stop you using them with the Wild list too, except your own imagination.

Have any of you played the new scenarios? The old editions biggest weakness IMHO were the scenarios.

You mean the book of battles? I am on my 4th one now as we are playing through slowly. Very very good and transform the way each faction plays we have found. Highly recommend this.

(Note although I moderate on the studio tomahawk forum, I am not actually connected to the company and am just a fan of Saga. I rate the book of battles a lot as a player.)

Got mine this morning and I must say that, at first glance, it has exceeded my expectations. Great value for the money, indeed!
