We have been having a lot of fun fighting our way through all the major battles of the Hungarian War of Independence of 1848-1849. This is one of the biggest wars that nobody has ever heard of. Well obviously lots of members of esteemed present company here on LAF have, but you know what I mean.
Our latest bout was the 2nd Battle of Komarom (or by some counts, the first); anyway, the one on 2 July 1849. This is good wargame fare because although the Austrian attacker intended it to be a limited and straightforward attacker-vs-defender action, the Hungarians sortied from their fortress in force. They counter-attacked, overran part of the Austrian line and turned it into a full-on ding-dong battle of about 30,000 Hungarians vs 50,000 or so Austrians and Russians. Thus both sides were trying to get stuck into the enemy and take the opposition's ground. Also, while one flank is woods and villages, the other is very open. This makes for a good combination of plenty of maneuver and plenty of intense fighting.
Our wargame of it was likewise a full-on ding-dong battle. AAR here:
