28mm Croats?
« on: December 11, 2018, 11:54:39 PM »
I am looking for some Croat cavalry in 28mm for the Thirty Years War.  I have mounted Croats from Warlord an TAG, but I am looking for dismounted figures.  The Imperial Army osprey book includes a picture of one and a description, listed as light infantry.  Does anyone have any suggestions for a dismounted Croat light infantry in 28mm?

I think Cossacks on foot are going to be your only option.  Dress seems to have changed very little so I am happy to mix Renaissance Cossacks with SYW Cossacks from Foundry, Eureka and Old Glory.
Clear the battlefield and let me see

There are no Croat infantry figures on the market I'm aware of, and I can't think of any figures from other ranges which look much like the Osprey illustration. I thought that Ottoman ranges might contain something suitable, but I've had a look and I can't see anything which comes close. I guess that if I were in your shoes I'd probably try to find other pictures of Croat infantry to see whether they always looked like the Osprey illustration.

Bit of a stretch and none of these are perfect, but you can try TAG Polish Haiduks

Or some of the cossacks (avoid packs that contain that bulbous onion-shaped hat)

Thank you for the suggestions, while I was searching recently, I found these figures from Old Glory.  https://www.oldgloryminiatures.com/proddetail.asp?prod=ERA-40.  I cant tell from the small black and white picture, but they seem to look decent for the job?  Ive never heard of Grenz infantry before, but they might do.  What do you think?

Personally not a fan of most Old Glory miniatures (personal preference) but they should do.  Grenzers were originally irregular light infantry (skirmishers) from the Imperial military border with the Ottomans, recruited largely in the Croatian region and were established in the 16th century to fight against Ottoman raids and encroachment.  The units continued well into the 19th century (they received more regular training and uniforms in the 18th century), and were also used to fight the Empire's foes on other fronts.  The below picture shows various Grenzer costumes and uniforms up through the 18th century (nrs. 2, 3 and 4 are 18th century and much too late for 17th century costume.  As irregulars, Grenzers of the 17th century didn't have "uniforms" and each wore his own clothing and versions of national costume - not all were Croats)
