The Werewolves of Berrylands. A Gothic Horror AAR
« on: December 20, 2018, 11:37:20 AM »
Thirteenth century England, ancient terrors still roam the land. A vicious pack of werewolves is terrorising the lonely village of Berrylands deep in the Surrey hills.
Only the brave Sir Ronald De Barker and his retinue are prepared to face these terrifying creatures . Armed with a silver edged sword and silver bolts for his crossbowmen they venture into the village to vanquish the evil!
So begins a scenario for the forthcoming Fistful of Lead Gothic Horror supplement. We were  also playtesting rules for Medieval combat hence the unusual period setting.

As usual with all our  FFoL games it was tremendous fun. Brave Sir Ronald riding his charger crashed into the Werewolf pack as it crossed the river. He managed to drive the Alpha Wolf back and then with two swings of his holy sword he decapitated two Werewolves! His luck subsequently changed when he was dragged from his horse and was horribly ripped apart in front of his men.
The Alpha Male made several howls causing fear in the soldiers and due to a special trait called regenerate wounds the Werewolves were difficult to put down.
Sir Ronald’s retinue fought bravely but due to appalling dice rolling. Eight ones rolled, the rest of his men were dispatched in rapid succession by the rabid Wolven. Only the Sergeant at arms killed another Werewolf before being brought down by the Alpha Male.

Sir Ronald’s allies who had pledged support to this holy crusade cowered in fear on the other side of the village. Their leader Sir Loin de Boef  only ventured towards the fighting when the wolf pack numbered were greatly depleted....

Well balanced battle report indeed.

The werewolves were fun to play and not as invincible as we first thought.  The werewolf traits are varied, which allows tweaking of the pack to suit play styles and scenarios, I chose the regenerate trait for the pack, which meant that each werewolf could heal a single wound at the end of each turn, and the Werewolf's Howl for the leader which could be used to cause fear and 'shake' those enemies not passing a test.  Another nice feature is the option to take normal wolves into the pack, they are less effective but their numbers (3 wolves in place of a single werewolf) are useful for overwhelming opponents.

I would have been a different game had Sir Loin de Boef's men joined the battle, but as it was the werewolves were able to concentrate on Sir Ronald's retinue, wearing them down until they died to a man.

Great game and FFoL has proven itself again to be a very flexible, fun set of rules.

Very enjoyable report and cracking photos. I do like the fact that you can tailor the monsters to suit a particular playing style.

😂

Force composition usually six figures for us. Although there is a new rule enabling you to field henchmen or hordes. These are three Figures activating  on the same card but only having one wound and rolling D8s.
In this game it was a pack of three wolves and I had three soearmen. They die quick but are good if you can mob an opponent with them.

Excellent idea - I think I will bowwow it for a game with the grandchildren.

Thanks for sharing

Sounds great. Be interesting parallel to see how the scenario plays out if set in the Victorian era.

Lovely photos.
I like what I read about the rules you have been playing.
Friends and I have been playing Pulp Alley.
Another set of rules that can be used for many time periods.
